With a grand opening celebration slated for the end of Feburary, new owner Steve Grill calls his decision to take on the franchise “very close to my heart.”
“One of our sons had trouble about a year ago in school, and the teacher recommended getting some outside help,” Grill said. “We got a tutor that really helped my son think independently and creatively beyond just traditional schoolwork and it really turned around his life… That led me to looking more into getting into the education business.”
Tutor Doctor specializes in partnering with schools and personally matching each student with a tutor who can best meet their needs, all of whom have received certifications in tutoring skills that go beyond academics.
“When you’re working with a child and you’re looking at their performance in school, it’s never just about the academics,” said Director of Education Dawn Oliver, who has a background working with children with learning disabilities and attention deficits. “There are so many other things that come into play that we can work on to help them with: prioritization, time management, organization…”
Through two certification programs, Oliver personally trains tutors on these types of life skills to help further the academic success of Santa Clarita students.
All Tutor Doctor tutors are also trained to take notice of their students’ particular learning styles and adapt their teaching methods to meet that style.
“There’s different ways people learn. They learn auditory by hearing things, some people learn tactile by actually doing and some people need to see things,” Grill said. “If you’re not learning this way, that’s fine– we have another way to show you.”

“Our goal is to actually work ourselves out of the job at some point, where the students really become passionate, love to learn and the tutors find that they’re really making a difference in the lives of these students,” Grill said.
