William S. Hart School District Celebrates 80 Years Of Excellence In Santa Clarita

The William S. Hart Union High School District is celebrating a major milestone this year – 80 years of educating students and shaping the Santa Clarita Valley.

District leaders, staff and community members gathered for a State of the District event to reflect on the past, highlight current achievements and look ahead to the future.

Originally founded in the 1945–46 school year with just 73 students, the district has grown into a cornerstone of the community, now serving about 20,000 students across 18 schools and programs.

Superintendent Michael Vierra said the anniversary represents a long-standing tradition of community support and student success.

“It’s just such a great tradition of excellence,” Vierra said, pointing to the strong partnerships between schools, families, local businesses and community organizations.

Board Trustee Aakash Ahuja said the district has remained a constant through decades of change in the valley.

“So many things have changed in our city… but the William S. Hart School District has been one of the constant forces which has defined our city,” Ahuja said.

Today, the district reports a graduation rate of about 97%, with more than 90% of students continuing on to college, career training or other post-secondary opportunities.

District officials say that success is driven by a focus on preparing students for all pathways – whether that’s a four-year university, trade school, military service or entering the workforce.

“We really use the phrase ‘every student opportunity ready,’” Vierra said.

That philosophy is backed by a wide range of programs, including career technical education, where about 7,000 students out of 20,000 are enrolled across 25 career pathways – from healthcare to skilled trades.

The district also highlighted its strong academic performance, with multiple schools earning state and national recognition, including California Distinguished School honors and a National Blue Ribbon School designation.

Beyond academics, leaders emphasized the importance of student support systems, including wellness centers on campuses, mental health services and partnerships with local agencies to ensure students feel safe and supported.

The district also pointed to its strategic plan, which focuses on five key areas:

  • student learning
  • safety and wellness
  • access and equity
  • financial stability
  • communication and collaboration

Leaders say those efforts are already showing results – from improved attendance rates nearing 95% to expanded academic opportunities and increased student participation in extracurricular programs.

Superintendent Vierra said a large percentage of the staff for the Hart School District attended as a student, showing just how much they believe in the district.

“We do have a very high percentage of our staff that grew up here, went to our schools and then came back here because it’s such a great community to live and raise your family,” Vierra said. “I think it’s not only that tradition, but they’re invested… they raise their families here, go to our schools, so there’s an investment.”

As the district celebrates its 80th anniversary, officials say the focus is now on the future – including expanding educational options, integrating artificial intelligence into learning and continuing to grow career pathways.

“We are committed to making sure every student feels safe, supported and reaches their potential,” Ahuja said.
