Volunteers have helped to clean up the Santa Clara River for the last 21 years, officials said.
This year, those who stopped by for the cleanup effort, which started in downtown Newhall, were encouraged to bring a canned or boxed non-perishable food item to donate to the SCV Food Pantry, offering residents two ways to give back.
The goal was to develop “a full barrel” of food to the Pantry, officials said.
Volunteers gathered before 8 a.m. at the Newhall Community Center before cleaning through the Santa Clara River wash.
And to date, thousands of volunteers have collected over 410,000 pounds of trash and debris from the Santa Clara River and its tributaries, according to Santa Clarita officials.
The Environmental Expo offered information about recycling, air quality, pollution prevention, water quality, open space preservation
and wildlife conservation programs in the Santa Clarita Valley.
There was also information about the trails, paseos and other outdoor activities available throughout the city of Santa Clarita.
