The TeamFirst Soccer Academy at The Master’s University is open to boys and girls ages 7-18. The camp is set to feature Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Trisha Venturini Hoch.
Together, all three soccer players have won five Olympic gold medals, five World Cup Championships and 12 NCAA titles, according camp officials.
The academy currently is traveling all around the United States. Santa Clarita is hosting the only camp in California, according to organizers.
“People come from all over the west coast to attend the camp,” said Carlos Marroquin, owner of SC Blue Heat. “There was even a family last year, that came all the way from Seattle.”
Hamm is the most prolific goal scorer ever, having represented her country 275 times since making the U.S National Team at age 15. As a 17-year National Team veteran, Mia played in three Olympic Games and four World Cups, according to the academy website.
“Mia Hamm is the Michael Jordan of soccer,” said Marroquin. “She is one of the best players in the world.”
The academy philosophy revolves around three key characteristics on the field: be a personality, be a playmaker and be a factor.
“Personality” creates a player that knows how to excel individually but still be a team player. “Playmakers” play unselfishly and create for themselves and their teammates. When you become a “factor” on the field, you make a difference for yourself and for your team.
It took Marroquin about three years to convince Mia Hamm to come to Santa Clarita for the first time back in 2015, and hopes she will come back next year.
“For me, it was amazing to bring the academy to Santa Clarita,” said Marroquin. “I really hope people enjoy the camp.”
The TeamFirst Soccer Academy is set to be hosted at The Master’s University on March 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
