“I think we have a lot of Santa Claritans who are maybe heading out of town to see their parents for the first time in a year, maybe,” said Myles McNamara, owner of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita.

While many adult children talk to their out-of-town senior parents on the phone regularly throughout the year, McNamara noted that it’s harder for aging loved ones who may be struggling in their daily life to mask these challenges in person.

As a result, McNamara is encouraging adult children to use the holiday weekend as an opportunity to pay attention to signs that could indicate it’s time for their senior loved one to get some extra help.

“When you get there, be observant,” McNamara said. “Look around the house and see if things have changed since last time you had eyes on.”

A few things McNamara recommended checking on include:

  • The refrigerator. Is it filled with expired or rotting food? Does it appear the senior is getting the nutrition they need?
  • The senior’s hygiene. Does their appearance or personal hygiene seem to have changed?
  • Mail. Are there stacks of mail, unpaid bills or past due notices around the house?
  • The car. Are there dents or other signs of a collision that weren’t there before?

In addition to these things, McNamara also recommended adult children let their senior loved one drive them to the store so their driving skills and reaction time can be observed.

Another way to be observant is to have the senior loved one help out with food preparation, according to McNamara.

“Be observant to see if your parents have lost a step, so to speak,” he said.

Depending on what an adult child notices during their Thanksgiving weekend visit, McNamara noted it could be time to consider getting the senior extra help based on their needs.

“It might be time to think about home care wherever they are, or at least some other aging-in-place plan,” McNamara said. “Some seniors choose to go into an assisted living. One thing they don’t want to do is go into a nursing home. But pay attention this holiday season. Look around.”
