Set to take place Saturday at Bridgeport Park in Santa Clarita, the event benefits the Alzheimer’s Association and encourages participants to “take the first step to a world without Alzheimer’s,” according to the event website.

“If you’d like to be on the Comfort Keepers team, we’d love to have you,” said Myles McNamara, president of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita.

Event organizers have set a goal of raising $110,000 this year, and teams from Santa Clarita had come together to bring in more than $82,000 — 75 percent of the total goal — as of the Monday before the event.

“We need participants, we need help, we need people to walk, get someone to sponsor you, raise as much money as we can,” McNamara said. “Alzheimer’s is such a nasty, nasty disease.”

McNamara called the statistics related to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families “staggering,” noting that the disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 16.1 million Americans providing 18.4 billion hours of unpaid care to family members who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s as family caregivers.

Because many adult children are “thrust” into the role of being a family caregiver for their senior parents in addition to caring for their own children, McNamara stressed the importance of self-care as well.

“When you’re on an airplane and you’re hearing all the emergency rules, if God forbid those oxygen masks drop, put your oxygen mask on first before you assist others,” McNamara said. “Why? Because if you pass out, you’re no good to anybody, and that’s what we tell family caregivers. You can’t care for anybody if you don’t care for yourself.”

In addition to regular home care in Santa Clarita, the Comfort Keepers team can also provide occasional care so family caregivers have time to take care of themselves, too.

“We provide the respite care for family caregivers so they can go out and … do whatever it is they need to do to get out of the house, care for themselves, lower their stress, their anxiety,” McNamara said.

He continued, “It’s just ridiculous out there how many people think they’re on an island, they have no resources, they’re just run down. Just the tonality in people’s voices when they call our office when they do finally hear about home care, and you can hear the desperation in their voice: ‘Help, help.’ Well that’s what we’re here for, is to take that stress off the family caregiver.”
