Program Director Bob Sharits noted that The Way Out Recovery SCV does not put “demands” on anyone’s recovery in their program, instead opting to offer guidance but let people learn from their own experiences so it can “sink in” in a different way.

“I can sit here and tell you this, that one drug is the same as any other drug, that if you try stopping one and you switch to another, one of two things is going to happen: you’re going to go back to the other one, or the new one is going to be your new problem,” Sharits said. “All of that is true, but if I tell you that, there’s a lot of people that are going to go, ‘Oh my God, don’t call Bob because he’s going to make you stop everything,’ and I’m not going to do that.”

Instead of requiring that people stop all substances in order to enter the program, Sharits shares his own experience with them: that when he first entered recovery for an addiction to methamphetamine, he didn’t think he was an alcoholic.

“Methamphetamine had been so prevalent in my life for the past 10 years before I came in that I thought, ‘Surely that’s my problem,’” Sharits recalled. “The truth is that, yes, absolutely, methamphetamine is a horrible drug and I cannot do that, but the worst stuff that ever happened in my life — the violent stuff, the dangerous stuff, the deadly stuff, the craziest stuff — was always under the influence of alcohol.”

For those who feel that they have never had these kinds of problems with drinking alcohol and can therefore safely drink during their recovery from drug addiction, Sharits had another reply.

“My response is always, ‘Thank you for reminding me of that — I’m going to go do some heroin because I’ve never had a problem with heroin,’” Sharits said. “And they go, ‘Well, wait a minute, that’s different,’ … and (I) go, ‘Is it different, really?’ It’s not any different. It’s exactly the same thing.”
