Trauma can often go unrecognized and be built up over a course of time. Trauma can be summoned when an event comes into an individual’s life that is too overwhelming too fast.
Psychotherapist Kristina De Bree discusses on The Insight Treatment Hour that there are often two types of trauma people can experience, Big T Trauma and Little T Trauma.
Big T Trauma is used to categorize intense life events such as: shootings, car accidents, assaults, combat, and any life threatening events. On the other hand Little T Trauma refers to the accumulation of smaller traumatic events such as rejection, neglect, or embarrassment.
Kristina De Bree describes these events as adding up to be “the straw that broke the camel’s back” where each small event can be seen as straw and the over accumulation of events eventually lead to a troubled state of mind.
Trauma Showing Itself In People and Warning Signs
High functioning people often disregard their own trauma. Although everyone is different, there are circumstances when a group can experience the same event, and only a few members experience trauma while others won’t.
Whether it is a shooting, bullying, or abuse, most patients can see themselves experiencing trauma red flag warnings, near or at crisis. These can be self harm, suicidal ideation, isolation.

Other subtle warning signs can range from: self doubt, guilt, worthlessness, change in sleep patterns, loss in pleasure, loss in energy, irritability, change in appetite patterns, or difficulty concentrating.
With difficulty concentrating being most common to see in students due to drop in grades reflecting a lack of school interest.
EMDR Therapy
EMDR Therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, is a therapy that Kristina De Bree deeply finds herself practicing. This aids Kristina when treating her patients suffering from any kind of trauma or PTSD.
Along with EDMR, Kristina goes over stabilization techniques which include breathing methods as well as breaking down 5 to 10 things ranging from memories, negative thoughts of a patient’s self, or semantic (body) experiences.
When manually digesting all this information, trauma can better be processed and then closed, aiding someone who struggles with the acceptance of their own trauma.
