Cryotherapy exposes the body to -220 F temperatures for just three minutes, prompting a “protective” response that can offer a number of health benefits, according to Co-Owner Matt Browning.

“Your body is exposed to extreme cold temperatures, putting your body into a protective mode, pulling the blood out of your extremities and into your core to ensure your vital organs are protected,” Browning explained.

During the process, the body starts producing endorphins and norepinephrine and oxygenating blood cells, virtually wiping out all the inflammation in the body in those three minutes.

Just a few other benefits of cryotherapy include improving the youthful look of skin and even burning 500 to 800 calories because the body is working in overdrive, according to Browning.

“It’s excellent for your skin, and people who do it regularly notice that their skin looks more youthful fairly quickly,” he said. “You do burn more calories (because) your body’s doing work when you’re in there.”

For those wondering if cryotherapy is safe, Browning assured that it is for most people, and that his staff check blood pressure and gather other basic information before administering it.

“It’s very safe,” he said. “We don’t allow anyone under 14 to do it … but it’s tolerable even for infants.”

Originally developed in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis, cryotherapy began being used across Asia and Europe over the next few decades for the variety of other health benefits it offers.

It wasn’t until about seven or eight years ago that the practice began picking up in the United States, helping everyone from serious athletes to those struggling with depression, anxiety and autoimmune issues.

“Some people do it just for a pick-me-up halfway through the day — it’s better than a cup of coffee,” Browning said. “You just have this really good, happy feeling afterwards and you have an energy that lasts you throughout the day.”
