Jasmine George joined The Way Out Recovery SCV radio show to talk about her journey to recovery and continues to help others who used to be in her place.
“It was no longer a choice for me to drink anymore,” Jasmine said.
Jasmine knew she had to get help when she said, “I drank to do everything. Folding laundry, I couldn’t do without a bottle of wine.”
Her first meeting was a family gathering at Castaic Lake to have fun while sober. She got involved with many groups and went to family therapy that Melissa Flowers, director of The Way Out Recovery SCV, offered her.
“When you are focusing on you, you need support outside of your family,” Melissa said.
When it comes to family they are going to base things on emotions if they hear the addict talk about drinking or is tempted to drink. Automatically they will panic and say the wrong thing because they fear their loved one will relapse.
This is why the addict needs to go to support groups so that they can be with people who understand what they are going through. In the groups they will connect and share how recently they have been tempted without hearing a gasp of fear.

“You need like-minded people,” Melissa said. “As long as you’re actively involved in something that supports your recovery then I think you’re on the right track.”
Melissa takes a moment to talk about what happens within the group sessions. Many people relapse and they come back to talk about it which is a beautiful thing to them. There is no shame in the groups if you relapse.
“Therapy for me was essential,” Jasmine shared. “You need empathy and insight. I would give my life for my children, but I couldn’t stop drinking for them.”
Most people make the excuse that they do not have the time to go to a support group. When you do not have that support the mind wanders into the negative side. When you hear stories at groups it helps you because there are people similar to you.
