A Santa Clarita orthodontist recently revealed the results of two studies that found having straight teeth versus crooked teeth have a significant impact on how people perceive one another.

The first study, performed at the University of Virginia, examined the way a person’s smile affects their candidacy for an open job position by sending photos to head hunters and HR representatives, according to Dr. Megan LeCornu of Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics.

“They took your photo and they photoshopped crooked teeth and photoshopped straight teeth, and then they sent out a resume along with your picture,” LeCornu explained. “Over the course of a year, they showed them all these different faces that were straight teeth and crooked teeth.”

Ultimately, people with straight teeth who had the same qualifications as someone with crooked teeth were 146 percent more likely to be hired, according to LeCornu.

These results parallel that of another study conducted by Kelton Research, which found that those with straight teeth are perceived as being 33 percent happier than those with crooked teeth, in addition to being smarter, more confident and more successful, LeCornu said.

“Having a great smile, that’s getting the promotion over someone. That’s getting the better job,” she continued. “It kind of infiltrates in all aspects of your life, including financial.”
