Ta-Ta Towels: From Humble Beginnings To ‘Shark Tank’ Success And Beyond

The anti-“boob sweat” towel bras known as Ta-Ta Towels weren’t always the smash hit they’ve become today, so KHTS is looking back on the revolutionary product’s journey from pet project to internet sensation.

Creator Erin Robertson had been working at a thankless job for 13 years when the inspiration for Ta-Ta Towels came to her. She had been getting ready for a first date in the summertime with a broken air conditioner, and couldn’t stop sweating.

After coming up with the innovative towel bra that would allow her “girls” to be “free” from the restriction of a traditional bra while stopping boob sweat, Ta-Ta Towels were born. Robertson began making them in her living room, looking up online videos in an effort to learn how to sew.

In her first 12 months, she sold 1.1 million Ta-Ta Towels online, landing her a coveted spot on the ABC show “Shark Tank” in 2018 to pitch her product to a panel of “Sharks” in an effort to make a business deal.

“It’s been life-changing,” Robertson told the Sharks during the episode. “Right before this happened, I had been a personal assistant for 13 years — hated my life. It was a really difficult job, so I quit and I was making all of these in my living room.”

After passing out samples of the Ta-Ta Towels — which included handing a pair of oranges to Kevin O’Leary so he could see “how it really feels,” much to the amusement of the panel — Robertson got down to business with her sales pitch.

She shared her impressive sales and profit stats, noting that the Ta-Ta Towels cost her just $24 to make and were selling for $45 at the time, with a special maternity line selling for $55.

“You’ve got to be just crushing it, rolling in the dough right now,” said Mark Cuban in response.

“You’re amazing — wow,” added Robert Herjavec.

Ultimately, Lori Greiner offered $200,000 for a 40 percent stake in the business, which Robertson accepted, according to CNBC.

Fast forward to 2020, and nearly 20 different varieties of Ta-Ta Towels are available online with an even more affordable price tag of $29.99, in addition to a brand new line of Testie Towels also available “for the full package in your life.”

“From sweat stains to discomfort to skin rashes and more, boob sweat has inconvenienced women forever,” the website states. “Ta-Ta Towels are perfect for nursing/breastfeeding, combating boob sweat or just lounging around. Look sexy and be comfortable with Ta-Ta Towels.”
