On the Traditions Health Hospice Hour, hosts May Ronci and Jim Holloway were joined by Doctor Brar, Henry Mayo Palliative Care Medical Director, UCLA Northwest Medical Director, and Assistant Professor at UCLA School of Medicine.
Together they spoke about educating others on palliative care, hospice care, and the misconceptions that come with these practices.
Palliative care refers to treatment of any serious illness through symptom management, regardless of the stage or progression. With hospice care, the focus lies more on those who have reached a stage in their treatment where no other cure is available, making the care surrounded more on comfort care.
Hospice care and palliative care are two separate practices for patients. Many believe that with palliative care comes the need for hospice care, however this is not entirely true.
Palliative care teams are made up primarily by physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, Chaplins, and social service workers. Everyone contributes their share of work as needed. As this team aims toward the patient, it also is there for members of the family.

The family may not require medical services from physicians or nurses, but could require services that relate to emotional, psychosocial, or spiritual issues. The family becomes just as important as the patient in hand in this case and thus another part of a team to work together.
The patient should always be the one to request such services as palliative care. However, with the complexity of medical care in our country, primary doctors of patients who are eligible for palliative care often know the patient best and because of this are able to submit a request for the palliative care or rather the patient’s family.
Doctor Brar advises families who are going through palliative care or who might have loved one eligible for palliative care to reach out to social services in their time to better educate them and allow them to be aware of the resources they are able to obtain.
While many may be experiencing increased health issues during the world’s current climate, it is important to start educating families on the services out there for symptom management and end of life care.
