Recycling saves money, environment
You know you could change your own oil. You’d save a few dollars and feel a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficient satisfaction. But what do you do with the four or five quarts of black gunk left over? Well, worry no longer. Feel free to roll up those sleeves and get greasy with pride, knowing that on October 17 College of the Canyons is hosting a motor oil recycling event.
From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in parking lot 8, officials from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works will collect used oil and filters for recycling free of charge. Participants will even receive a free oil container in exchange for their used oil while supplies last. More information is available at 888cleanla.org.
Used motor oil is insoluble and can contain toxic chemicals. Oil runoff often ends up in oceans and waterways, where it threatens wildlife. It can also contaminate municipal water supplies, resulting in high clean-up costs. The five quarts from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of water, enough to supply 50 people for a year.
