Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, released a statement regarding the recent shutdown of several businesses in California in which he condemned “liberal politicians” in reaction to the re-closure of several business sectors throughout the state.
During Governor Gavin Newsom’s Monday COVID-19 update, it was announced that select monitored counties, including Los Angeles County, are to cease indoor operations in fitness centers, places of worship, offices for non-critical sectors, personal care services, hair salons, barbershops and malls, according to the Governor’s office.
“When our economy was on the brink due to COVID-19, Congress in a bipartisan fashion provided small businesses, their workers and families with financial support,” Garcia said in a statement Tuesday. “Now that the politicians in Sacramento have decided to shut California down again – the only state to reach such a level – the question for them is: what are they doing to help our small businesses, their workers and families bridge this gap?”
This announcement comes as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise in Los Angeles County and across California.
Garcia noted that this closure endangered small businesses and the people who are supported by them throughout the state, an oversight he accredited to “liberal” policymakers in state government.
“These same liberal politicians increased taxes by $3 billion and had a surplus of state government funds,” Garcia said. “Now we find ourselves asking: where is the state aid for our families and small businesses as budgets get cut and we face more shutdowns?”
Garcia noted that he supports personal health protocols related to masks and social distancing, but that the impact that the shutdown would have on local businesses concerned him.
“Wearing face masks, practicing social distancing, washing hands and quarantining if you have symptoms are a must, but our small businesses simply cannot survive another closing like this,” Garcia said.
Garcia plans to pursue additional funding for small business when he travels to Washington D.C. in the coming weeks, he announced.
“Christy Smith and her pals in Sacramento abdicated their responsibility by empowering San Francisco liberals to have complete control of state government via proxy voting, and every single day it shows,” said Garcia. “Next week, I will return to Washington where I will work in a bipartisan fashion to secure more funding for our small businesses and their families, but it’s time Assemblywoman Smith and her liberal friends tell us what they are going to do to help as they insist on another shutdown.”

The virus is not political; people are dying regardless of their political affiliation. For Garcia this is the epitome of hypocrisy when his win political party is led by Trump who refused to wear a mask for 4+months, denounces medical and scientific fact and instead insists this pandemic is a hoax. We wouldn’t be in this situation now if Trump provided real leadership on a national level instead of forcing the state governors to scramble to meet their constituents needs.
Today, there is still NO national strategy to address this pandemic and now 1 in 5 new global cases are from 3 US states. Trump has been dead wrong (pun intended) on EVERY facet of this health crisis and you, Mike Garcia are nothing but a mouthpiece of misinformation, deflection and distraction.

Good grief. The Federal Government is responsible when states are overwhelmed. Condemning the majority with blanket proclamations won’t help us one bit. In the real world conservative and liberal are adjectives. Neither is sufficient to justify off-hand dismissal of huge swaths of our fellow California’s.

If anyone needs proof Garcia is a piglet sucking on the teat of Trump, just look at the words and phases he uses, not just in this, but in every other political statement he makes… blaming “liberal politicians, Christy Smith and her pals, Liberal friends Liberal, liberal, liberal” as though the word is some horrible life-ending pox. It’s not.
Stick to real issues that contribute to our well being and cut out your smear talk. Be critical of Smith’s policies but be specific as to how and what you would do differently. How about speaking to our efforts to stay alive while beating this pandemic. Mike should lay out his Grand Plans because going back to the last time he came around I’ve yet to hear one; only slogans. I cannot help believing he is nothing more than a plug-in number with an R behind it. His record indicates he is very, very, very good at following orders. That’s not a leader.

Closing churches, salons, indoor dining, etc is not the problem. The problem was created 3 and 4 weeks ago when protesters where gathering in the 10’s of thousands with zero social distancing, minimal face coverings, no sanitation, and screaming at the top of their lungs. Businesses were doing everything they were told to do. Mature citizens were adhering to the new normal. Now businesses and conscience citizens get to pay for their arrogance.
Yeah your team provided some of us with a $1200 check… that just about fixed everything. Your team did great there. Newsome is doing the right thing. People were told to wear masks. They didnt and now we all pay the price. Dont mirror Trump. Promote unity not division. Trumps going down. And Christy Smith is on the November ballot.
Garcia is absolutely CORRECT. Many businesses are already having to close doors permanently. Adding more shutdowns without considering that the (supposed) increase in cases is more likely from the protests and riots, and NOT the contacts in businesses where they are adhering to all safety protocols IS political in my estimation. It certainly isn’t logical. Many businesses are hanging on by a thread as it is. I consider these as random closures at the whim of Newsom and whether political or not, ILL ADVISED. This is NOT what I consider good leadership… Newsom closed all businesses BUT his winery at one point. That is self serving, pure and simple. Horrible leadership! He is supposed to be here to take care of constituents, NOT ruin them. It looks more like he HATES us than is supporting us. He is bankrupting our State by closures, the worst unemployment since depression, money and freebies to illegals, Sanctuary state and on and on!!

Be sure to vote NO in Nov on Prop 15 to protect the 1978 Prop 13 tax protection for commercial and businesses.
We are really tired of the radical left trying to enforce there power not caring about the hard working people closing all small businesses when all the big corporations are open and getting richer by the minute .we need our kids get back to school I do understand taking all the precautions. Kids need their education and socialize. Many parents need go back to work that is also good for the economy.
It’s a shame the federal leadership didn’t take charge at the onset, instead leaving governors to deal with this unique situation. I must say that the inconsistencies in policy are largely due to the unknowns of this virus. We’re still learning more about it.
Looks like we’ll have to learn to live with the cycle of suffocation and resuscitation of our economy too.
Perfect. I was sure there would be an opportunity to see a more reasons why I voted against Mike and his Trump enabled vision. In November if he wins again the deaths of more people due to fact and science denial won’t be on my conscience. He will not get a vote from me. Where is the concern for our health care workers? Where is the ability to separate the coolaide drinking anger from pandemic science. Wake up.
