Elections in Los Angeles County are officially certified as of Tuesday, with Santa Clarita race results receiving a final update from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC).
After the first two weeks of excitement, most elections in the Santa Clarita Valley settled clearly upon the winners, here’s a recap of our new representatives at the federal, state, county, city, and school levels.
A total of 3,793,106 ballots were processed and counted, with 66.12% of eligible voters casting ballots in Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to declare the election officially concluded on Tuesday, Dec.17.
Note: All voting tallies are current as of Tuesday, Dec. 3. Statewide race results may shift depending on other county practices.
U.S. Senate
U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, who at one point represented the Santa Clarita Valley as a State Senator, swept ahead of former Dodgers player Steve Garvey in not one but two races, both for the same seat.
In the race for the full-term California U.S. Senate, Schiff secured victory with 58.9% of the vote, in contrast to Garvey’s 41.1%.
The partial-term U.S. Senate race also left Garvey in the dust, only taking 6,203,688 votes (41.2%) in comparison to Schiff’s 8,836,481 (58.8%)
U.S. House – CA District 27
Though early results looked like a secure re-election for incumbent Rep. Mike Garcia, (R-Santa Clarita), additional tallies in the second week led to challenger George Whitesides claiming victory.
Whitesides, the former Chief of Staff for NASA, ended with 51.3% of the vote. A former U.S. Navy Fighter Pilot, Garcia ended with 48.7%.
California State Senate – District 23
With no incumbent, the battle for State Senate was a fierce one, with Republican candidate Suzette Martinez-Valladares taking in 190,957 votes to victory.
A former State Assemblywoman, Valladares was up against attorney Kipp Mueller, who ended with 173,695 votes.
California State Assembly – District 34
Communities on the northeastern edges of the Santa Clarita Valley are keeping their current representative, with State Assemblyman Tom Lackey sweeping many of the votes. Lackey took a staggering 62% of votes, with challenger Ricardo Ortega securing 38%.
California State Assembly – District 40
AD40 is also keeping its current representative, with Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo securing re-election to the State Assembly with 52.8% of the vote. Patrick Lee Gipson, a former sheriff’s Deputy, took 47.2%.
Los Angeles County District Attorney
The much-derided Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon has been defeated by one of his own DAs, Nathan Hochman.
Gascon has been blamed for a rise in crime in Los Angeles County and for promoting policies that many victims, their families, law enforcement, and even his own junior DAs have deemed “for the criminal.” He ended with only 40.11% of the vote.
Hochman took 59.89%, tallying up 1,983,802 votes.
Santa Clarita City Council – District 1
In a three-way race for Santa Clarita City Council, Planning Commissioner Patsy Ayala took the top spot with 4,563 votes (35.61%).
Meanwhile, Bryce Jepsen collected 4,142 (32.33%) and Tim Burkhart got 4,108 (32.06%)
