With registered voters surpassing 22 million in California, the state is seeing a record number of eligible voters registered this year.
As of Nov. 1, over 22 million voters are registered in California and over 11 million have sent in ballots, according to information obtained from the California Secretary of State Communications Department.
“For the first time, California now has more than 22 million registered voters,” said Secretary of State Alex Padilla. “There are more voters registered in California than the number of people in the state of Florida.”
The number of registered voters in California has jumped by over 3 million people since midterm elections in 2018, when a little over 19 million people were registered to vote.
The jump from the 2016 presidential election is even more dramatic, with over 4 million more voters registered in 2020. There were about 18 million registered voters in California during the 2016 election.
Of the 22 million voters registered in California, over 11 million have voted by mail and over 600,000 have cast traditional ballots at polling places as of Nov. 1.
About 83 percent of eligible voters, or almost 21 million people, were registered to vote in July of 2020, compared to about 73 percent in July of 2016 and about 76 percent in September of 2018.
Registration by political party has remained relatively steady over the course of the three elections, with the percentage of voters registered as Democratic ranging from around 44 to 46 percent of registered voters.
Republican voters made up anywhere from around 25 to 27 percent of the population of registered voters, while those with no party preferences consisted of about 23 to 27 percent of the voting population.
“If you missed the voter registration deadline, you still have to opportunity to vote using ‘Same Day’ Registration,” added Padilla. “2020 marks the first year that voters can complete the ‘Same Day’ voter registration process and cast their ballot at any in-person voting location in the county or the county elections office.”
