Garcia Supports Clean Reauthorization Of Violence Against Women Act

Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, has cosponsored H.R. 1892, a bill that would provide a clean, one-year reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Wednesday, Garcia announced his co-sponsorship of a one-year reauthorization of VAWA, an act that effectively expired in 2019.is bill aims to provide the reauthorization of important services to protect women and children who are survivors of sexual assault or domestic abuse, according to Garcia’s office.

“I am proud to support the clean reauthorization of VAWA, which has proven to provide women and children who are survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault the help and resources they need,” Garcia said. “The reauthorization of VAWA shouldn’t be a partisan issue, nor should it be tied to more partisan pet projects. I am proud to support this bill that would provide necessary services and resources to survivors of domestic abuse.”

This bill would provide the clean reauthorization of VAWA, which enables funding for safety and support for survivors, increases prevention efforts, expands educational awareness on domestic abuse and sexual assault, and more, according to Garcia’s office.

As of Wednesday, text has not been received by Congress for H.R.1892, to reauthorize Department of Justice programs that combat violence against women, and for other purposes.

“Bills are generally sent to the Library of Congress from GPO, the Government Publishing Office, a day or two after they are introduced on the floor of the House or Senate,” reads the H.R. 1892 site. “Delays can occur when there are a large number of bills to prepare or when a very large bill has to be printed.”

The original VAWA, introduced by the 103rd Congress, was co-sponsored by at-the-time Senator Joseph Biden. Because text has not been received, changes from the original are not yet clear. The text of the original VAWA can be read here.

  2. Please tell me what your reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act would do that the current legislation, which you voted against, would do differently.

  3. You coo-sponsored a bill that is only effective for one year – Big Fat Deal 😳😳
