The Santa Clarita City Council approved the purchase and preservation of over 200 acres of land during their regular meeting Tuesday night.
The City Council of Santa Clarita approved the purchase of approximately 242.44 acres of “real property” west of the city from Los Angeles County during its regular meeting on Tuesday night.
The property acquisition, which includes woodlands to the south of Pico Canyon Road and West of The Old Road in Newhall, is anticipated to “enhance” the City’s ongoing efforts to preserve open space and to complete the open space “greenbelt” surrounding the City.
Councilmember Laurene Weste noted that the purchase was “a long time coming.”
Funded by the Open Space District Acquisition Fund, the total cost is expected to be $1,093,255, which includes property purchase price, escrow, title, appraisal fees, due diligence costs, maintenance, and payment of annual property taxes.
Weste acknowledged the efforts of Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, in getting funding from the state to continue the protection of natural lands in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“We should thank Senator Scott Wilk for getting a chunk of change to do some very positive work on open space that we may not have been able to do without this assist,” Weste said.
Wilk has termed out, and will not be seeking re-election in November.
