City Council Weighs-In On State Legislature Bills, Approves Contract For Traffic Enhancements

In a regular meeting, the Santa Clarita City Council voted on whether to support specific bills from the California State legislature and approved a contract for traffic enhancements in Newhall.

The Santa Clarita City Council voted to approve and oppose bills from the state legislature and approved a contract to enhance bicycle and pedestrian paths in Newhall during a Tuesday meeting.

The council voted to oppose Assembly Bill (AB) 2097, Senate Bill (SB) 897 and SB 1067.

Each of the bills relates to land use. According to the city council agenda, the bills undermine local authority regarding land use.

The city council also voted to support SB 485, which extends the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program for another five fiscal years.

The council voted to support SB 1108, which reinstates a rule allowing a person to be charged with a felony and up to three years in prison if they have been convicted of petty theft, shoplifting, grand theft, burglary, auto theft, robbery, elder financial abuse or knowingly receiving stolen property three or more times before.

The city council plans to have position statements sent to the authors of each of the bills, Santa Clarita’s representatives in the state legislature, Governor Gavin Newsom and other relevant parties.

Also at the meeting the city council revealed that they planned to file litigation opposing the decision by the L.A. Board of Supervisors to open up Camp Scott for youth inmates.

Following last week’s decision the Mayor Laurene West expressed her disapproval with the decision, with fellow council members echoing her position. Over the last few months the council has sent letters to the board to express their avid disapproval.

“We will do everything we can to stop this from happening,” said West on Tuesday.

In addition at Tuesday’s meeting, a contract was awarded to Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. for the design of bicycle and pedestrian enhancements along Walnut Street, Market Street, Newhall Avenue and 16th Street in Newhall.

A traffic signal is also set to be placed at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Walnut Street to improve traffic safety there.

The total contract amount will not exceed $102,500.

  1. Hopefully that’s not “code words” for road diets taking away more motorists lanes for bikey boys, like they did on the new Skyline Ranch Road. They screwed up Vista Canyon roads by making them toooooo narrow, waiting for an emergency where two cars can barley get by safely! Those people in the new smashed together Doll/condo houses are in big trouble when an emergency happens! Greedy damn demonic developers. Good luck happy new home owners—

  2. Synchronized traffic signals!
