A continuance of the flavored vaping ban and the possible Via Princessa extension is expected to be discussed by the Santa Clarita City Council on Tuesday, officials said.
After passing an “emergency ordinance” to temporarily restrict flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, the council is set to propose extending the ordinance for over 10 months, according to the agenda.
The City Council is also expected to discuss an extension of Via Princessa, which would connect the street to Golden Valley Road in Canyon Country.
Flavored Tobacco
On Oct. 1, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance that requires tobacco retailers in the County unincorporated areas to obtain a business license, as well as a Tobacco Retailers License and also prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products, including electronic cigarette and vaping products for 180 days.
City of Santa Clarita staff has met with representatives of the Los Angles County Sheriff’s Department to begin to explore the extent of the issues of youth vaping and smoking in Santa Clarita. City staff also intends to reach out to representatives of the various school districts in the Santa Clarita Valley to evaluate these issues, according to officials.
City staff is aware that several existing retailers in the City are selling flavored tobacco products, according to the agenda.

Staff is concerned that during this period of research and study, the County’s ordinance could have the effect of causing tobacco retailers in the County to relocate to Santa Clarita to avoid the new County regulations.
“The potential for additional retailers to proliferate in the City while City staff is exploring the scope of the health issues and possible legislative solutions presents an immediate threat to the health and welfare of the City’s residents—especially youth in the City,” reads the agenda.
The current City ordinance is in effect until Nov. 22, with the City Council expected to vote on an extension until Oct. 7, 2020.
Via Princessa
The city council is set to approve a land purchase to expand Via Princessa to connect the existing roadway to Golden Valley Road.
The expansion would open up new travel options between the current roadway in Canyon Country and Golden Valley Road near the new Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The land parcel is reported to be used “for road right-of-way and temporary grading and construction easements,” according to city documents.
The total cost of the land purchase is expected to cost approximately $330,000.
The Santa Clarita City Council meeting is set for 6 p.m on Nov. 12 at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Boulevard.
