Christy Smith Holds Narrow Lead In Close Congressional Race

Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, holds a narrow lead over incumbent Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, for California’s 25th Congressional seat (CA-25), in a race deemed a “close contest” by the state of California.

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 — Smith holds a narrow lead of 256 votes, giving Mike Garcia nearly 50 percent of the vote.

UPDATE: 4:45 p.m. — Garcia is closing the gap, with Smith still holding a slight lead in an update from Los Angeles County.
As of 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Smith held 50.32 of the vote and Garcia held 49.68 percent, with about 1,700 votes separating the two- which includes Ventura voting precinct numbers.

As of 7:55 a.m. Wednesday, Smith held 50.5 percent of the vote and Garcia held 49.5 percent, with less than 3,000 votes separating the two candidates.

These results come with 100 percent of the vote-by-mail ballots within Los Angeles County counted, 94.38 percent of CA-35’s Ventura precincts reporting, and 826,938 ballots from Los Angeles County’s vote centers counted.

When the first vote counts were reported at around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, Smith held a larger lead over Garcia, as the first round of reporting came from Democratic-leaning vote-by-mail ballots.

However, as the voting center ballots have slowly continued to be reported, Garcia has gradually closed that gap. This has prompted California state officials to deem the race a “close contest.”

Below are the preliminary results for the race as of 7:55 a.m.

Mike Garcia – R – Incumbent: 128,462 — 49.50%
Christy Smith – D: 131,218 — 50.50%

Neither campaign has officially declared victory or conceded as of Thursday afternoon.

  1. Terrific. Higher taxes, national lockdowns, pro-homelessness, even more crime and drug problems now coming to SCV in spades.

  2. Newsom will try to convince Californians that being homeless is a badge of honor.

  3. Charles and Get_CA_SANE, whether Garcia wins or not, this is still CALIFORNIA. Wake up and smell the weed, man. You’re not going to find what you’re looking for here.
