No New Los Angeles County Election Updates Expected Until Tuesday

Santa Clarita residents following some of the close local contests of the 2020 election may have to wait a little longer than they had hoped, as officials with Los Angeles County are not expected to issue another update regarding the vote count until Tuesday.

Officials with Los Angeles County are not expected to issue an update on the vote count for the 2020 election until Tuesday, Nov. 10, according to officials with the Office of the County of Los Angeles’ Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.

Over 600,000 ballots are still estimated to be counted within Los Angeles County. County officials across the state of California have until the beginning of December to report their final results to the state for the presidential race, while they have until Dec. 4 to report the results for all other races. The state then has one week from that deadline to certify the results of the 2020 election.

The latest update from Los Angeles County came in late Friday afternoon, which showed incumbent Republicans Mike Garcia and Scott Wilk holding narrow leads in their respective races.

In the race for California’s 25th Congressional District (CA-25) seat, Garcia held a 432-vote lead over challenger Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita. Officials with Ventura County reported that 100 of votes in precincts located within CA-25 had been counted, leaving the remainder of the votes for the race within Los Angeles County.

The results as of Friday afternoon can be viewed below:

MIKE GARCIA – Incumbent 148,916 50.07%
CHRISTY SMITH 148,484 49.93%

The race between Garcia and Smith is one of two elections in the Santa Clarita Valley that state officials have deemed a “close contest,” the second of which is between State Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, and Democratic challenger Kipp Mueller for California’s 21st State Senate District (SD-21).

As of 4:30 p.m. Friday, Wilk was ahead of Mueller by an estimated 3,407 votes.

This is a slight expansion of Wilk’s lead the day before when he held 50.4% of the vote and Mueller held 49.6%, with a little over 2,500 votes separating the two.

Officials with San Bernardino County reported that 100 of votes in precincts located within SD-21 had been counted, leaving the remainder of the votes for the race within Los Angeles County.

Below are the preliminary results for the race as of Friday afternoon:

SCOTT WILK – Incumbent 160,724 50.07%
KIPP MUELLER 157,317 49.93%

Meanwhile, the race for the second seat on the Santa Clarita City Council remains close, with Jason Gibbs maintaining a 3,118-vote lead over Kelvin Driscoll, with the two currently earning the second and third largest number of votes in Santa Clarita City Council race.

Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth’s seat was also up for election in 2020, but the incumbent councilman is on track to retain it in record-breaking fashion, earning 31.36% of the vote with 51,215 votes.

This number is a new record within Santa Clarita politics, marking the most votes that a Santa Clarita City Council candidate has received in an election. The previous record came in 2016, when Councilmember Bob Kellar earned 32,216 votes.

The Santa Clarita City Council race results as of Friday can be found below:

CAMERON M. SMYTH (N) – Incumbent 51,215 31.36%
JASON GIBBS (N) 26,630 16.30%
