Representatives from across the Santa Clarita Valley have issued statements of remembrance on the 21st anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday. 

On 9/11, also known as Patriot’s Day, representatives from every tier of government have spoken out to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the sacrifices made. 

Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement proclaiming Sept. 11 as Patriot’s Day: “On this day of remembrance, I have ordered all flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff.”

Today marks 21 years since the unconscionable attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and irrevocably changed our world.

“21 years ago today, thousands of Americans were killed by acts of pure evil,” said Congressman Mike Garcia (R-Santa Clarita.) “While horror unfolded, we saw brave men and women put themselves in danger to save however they could.”

Others continued to voice their support for the bravery of that day, and the bravery that continues in first responders today. 

“We honor those who’ve lost their lives and renew our commitment to support firefighters, police officers, veterans, and all who run towards harm’s way,” said L.A. Supervisor Kathryn Barger. 

Not only are those who responded that day remembered, but so are the thousands of innocent lives taken. 

“It’s been 21 years since nearly 3,000 innocent people were killed by radical terrorists in the brutal and cowardly attacks of September 11,” said Senator Scott Wilk. 

“Today we remember and honor the thousands of victims of 9/11, 21 years after the attacks. We will never forget you,” said Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares.

“The City of Santa Clarita joins with all Americans in remembering the life of those who were lost and keeping close to mind all those who were affected that fateful day,” said the City of Santa Clarita in a statement. 

With the event taking place over two decades ago, some representatives have stressed the importance of educating the younger generation on what happened, as many do not have any memory of it or were not yet born. 

“We know exactly where we were when we saw those horrific images on TV, but now there is an entire generation of teenagers and young adults who have no memory of that day and the weight it still carries,” said Wilk.

“Twenty-one years later, we keep alive the memory of all the precious lives stolen from us at Ground Zero, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon,” said President Joe Biden in a statement.
