On Friday afternoon, the Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins announced committee leadership positions, revealing that Wilk had been named as Vice Chair for four of those committees.

These committees are the Agriculture, Education, Governmental Organization, and Rules, which is considered to be one of the most influential committees in the Senate, according to Wilk.

“I am honored that my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, have elected me to serve as the vice chair of the Senate Rules Committee,” said Wilk. “With a new governor, we will have a busy agenda. I’m looking forward to working with Governor-elect Newsom to ensure we have the highest caliber people serving in state government.”

The Senate Rules Committee is responsible for vetting hundreds of key gubernatorial appointments and serves as the key committee in the Senate’s role of “advice and consent.”

It also has jurisdiction over proposed amendments and rules that govern the Senate, as well as all other matters relating to the business of the Legislature.

“As a member of the Rules Committee, I am committed to fully examining the gubernatorial appointments, working to ensure the Senate operates efficiently and transparently, as well as assisting my colleagues as they navigate the legislative process,” said Wilk.

More committee assignments will be announced in January, and Wilk said that he was informed that he should expect to be named to an additional three committees.
