In order to enforce the licensing requirements, the officers reach out to each pet owner with expired pet licenses and bring those owners up to date with the licensing laws, according to the DACC website.
During this enforcement, the officers are able to tell whether the owners have moved, whether the pets are deceased, or whether they are no longer with the owner, according to the DACC website.
Field enforcement efforts are designed to ensure that residents’ dogs and cats are in compliance with mandatory licensing requirements, microchipping, spaying and neutering.
Additionally, California law requires that all dogs over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. In addition, the County of Los Angeles requires the same for all cats.
As of January 1, 2014, puppies may be vaccinated at three months but are not required to be vaccinated until four months of age.
Securing a dog or cat license is essential in assisting animal control agencies if a pet becomes lost, according to officials.
Residents not in compliance will be subject to license fees, delinquency charges and a $40 field enforcement fee.
In order to avoid penalties, residents can obtain a new license by printing the application online on DACC’s website, or by visiting a local county animal care center.
Residents may also renew online if their pet’s license is not delinquent, as well as receive information on licensing fees.
DACC offers low-cost vaccinations, $15 microchip clinics and low-cost assistance for spay and neuter surgeries.
