‘Don’t Let Their Next Drive Be Their Last’: Santa Clarita Deputies Urge Safe Driving During Graduation Season

With graduations at the forefront of students’ minds, deputies are urging parents to check in on their teens’ driving practices, hopeful that their “next drive won’t be their last.”

As car crashes remain the leading cause of teen deaths in the United States, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is encouraging parents to talk to their teens about safe driving practices to help avoid a similar tragedy.

“Graduations are usually the focus of many students and families this time of year, but is your teen driving the speed limit to graduation practice,” posed a question from the SCV Sheriff’s Station? “Driving home safely from graduation gatherings? Avoiding reading those congratulatory texts while driving?”

The end of the school year can be an especially risky time and a vehicle can be a deadly weapon, according to deputies.

“Every day, about seven teens aged 13-19 have died due to motor vehicle crashes, and hundreds more were injured” read a statement from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2018. “Don’t let your child’s next drive be their last, educate your teens about the safe practices needed to drive. It all starts with a talk.”

While opening up about safe driving practices, take the following protocols:

  • Make sure they are well-rested before driving
  • Give them options for a safe, sober way to get home
  • Talk about distractions while driving such as texting, loud music and friends
  • Encourage them to wear a seatbelt at all times

“Protect your child,” read a statement from the SCV Sheriff’s Station. “Don’t let their next drive be the last one.”

  1. Stop the cell phone addiction!! Driving, walking, biking, eating meals with emotionally stable adults is very hazardous to stable adult with good behaviors!
