“A huge thing is supervision,” said Deputy Kevin Duxbury of the SCV Sheriff’s Department. “You have to determine the maturity of your child and if you think they’ll be safe either supervised or unsupervised.”
Duxbury also recommended that drivers do their part as well, keeping an eye out for children.
“You gotta slow your roll for halloween. Just expect the unexpected,” he said. “Let them have their fun, but watch out for them.”
Impaired drivers are responsible for 43 percent of all traffic fatalities on halloween, according to the National Traffic Safety Administration.

The following are safety tips for parents, motorists and anybody in costume, courtesy of Duxbury and the FDA:
Parents
- If children are going unsupervised, make a map of the streets they will be walking so they can be found easily if anything happens.
- Feed anybody going out a light snack so they don’t eat candy as they walk.
- When kids get home, inspect all of their candy before they eat it. Discard anything that isn’t vacuum wrapped, such as lollipops.
- Check the labels of any candy for food allergies your children may have.
- Check Megan’s Law for sex offenders in your area. Help your children avoid areas where they might come into contact with predators.
Motorists
- Slow down, especially when going through residential streets. Children cross the street throughout neighborhoods and there may not be crosswalks.
- Don’t back into a driveway. Your visibility isn’t as good looking back and there could be children crossing behind you.
- Make sure to call a taxi service such as Uber or Lyft if one has been drinking.
Trick-or-Treaters
- Try to cross the street from corner to corner.
- Only cross when there is good visibility from either direction.
- Bring glow sticks or a flashlight so one can be seen, especially if one is in a dark costume.
- Don’t wear face paint with a particularly bad smell. It could be contaminated. Throw it away and use another one.
- Don’t wear any makeup or costume jewelry to bed. It could irritate your skin or fall off and make a mess. Always remove makeup in the way advised by the packaging.
