During a press conference Tuesday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Sheriff Alex Villanueva warned of the effects the COVID-19 vaccine mandate could have on the Department.
During the meeting, Villanueva used a PowerPoint showing that over the last year, there has been an increase of early retirements and workers’ compensation claims compared to before, partly due to the Board of Supervisors’ decision to force a vaccine mandate.
From October 2019 through October 2020, there were 515 retirements, the PowerPoint showed.
From October 2020 to October 2021, there were 617 retirements, a difference of 102 deputies who have filed for retirement.
Many of those retiring have institutional knowledge and are experts in their fields with over 28 years of experience, according to Villanueva.
In addition to the extra 102 staff retiring, 238 sworn personnel have stated their interest in leaving the Department, Villanueva said.
Workers’ compensation claims are also on the rise and have increased by 21.9 percent this year compared from last year.
Between October 2019 to October 2020, there were 1,434 workers’ compensation claims and as of October 2020 to October 2021, there were 1,749, many attributed to the vaccination mandates, according to Villanueva.
Many deputies push through injuries throughout the years, but due to the vaccination mandate, personnel are instead deciding to file workers’ compensation claims to get surgery, Villanueva said.
As of Tuesday, 51.7 percent of the department’s personnel are fully vaccinated and 1.7 percent are semi-vaccinated, according to officials.
The low vaccination numbers are due to many not having faith in the vaccine or the political ideology behind the vaccine, Villanueva said.
There are 4,185 staff members, both sworn and professional, who may be subject to termination because of the vaccine mandate with 3,137 of the 4,185 personnel being sworn deputies.
Due to the mandate, Villanueva is concerned for the public’s safety as unvaccinated deputies are being able to apply for employment in surrounding counties or states that do not require vaccination.

Trimming the police force is exactly the goal of the mandate. This is the desired outcome for Gavin which is why he did it using his emergency powers. Didn’t need a ballot measure, defunding, or anything else. Pretty smooth isn’t it.

Many members of the force are not complying. The force wouldn’t be “trimmed” if members cooperated.
There are consequences to the choices a person makes.
They are not complying because many of them had their Doctors tell them not to. If you had Covid and have high Antibodies, you should not be given the vaccine. Science guides that it is the antibody load (immunity) we should be measuring not a binary vaccination. You can be immune and not vaccinated. Either way, you can still transmit so what are we really protecting from here?

Vaccine mandates are unconstitutional. If the Board of Supervisors want to put out a mandate, they are legally bound to take responsibility of any officer being injured by this DNA changing fake vaccine.

I DON’T WATCH CNN so leave me alone! And it’s none of your business anyway. You don’t know me but you clearly want to insult others at every chance you get! These public servants who are paid through our tax dollars take an oath to serve and protect the public, by refusing to get vaccinated they do neither. Fire them all. It’s been done before, funny how conservatives forget it was their chosen one, Ronald Reagan in 1981, who fired over 11,000 on strike air traffic controllers and then banned them from returning to these federal jobs for life. Reagan, did this and certainly the loss of air traffic controllers could have jeopardized the public’s safety, but it didn’t. Villanueva is arrogant, egotistical and full of crap; the numbers he stated are NOT true; in other words he lied to all of us. Data drawn from the actual sheriff’s reports indicates many of the officers he claimed would be lost due to the vaccine mandates were ALREADY on track to leave BEFORE the vaccine mandate was announced. Villanueva needs to do the job he swore to uphold, if he is unwilling to then he MUST be replaced immediately. The county of Los Angeles and the state of CA deserve better.
You are discounting immunity entirely with this argument, much like CDC and elected leaders are doing. Prevention of hospitalization is not about being vaccinated, it is about being immune. One with high antibodies (from having Covid and antibodies) should not be vaccinated and should not be fired. Either way, vaccinated and immune, it can still be spread. Science.
What a load of crap. It is a false equivalency to compare workers demanding more money and holding America hostage if they don’t get it to the State demanding that workers risk their health for a “vaccine” that has little observed benefit but a high incidence of serious side effects and death.
Villaneuva sees clearly that the vax mandate threatens public safety and has a duty to alert the public to that danger. I applaud him for doing his duty.

My long-time LASD homicide detective brother (ended up acting head of the crime lab) would not have hesitated to get a Covid vaccination to help keep his family safe, everyone he encountered on the job, etc. My fill-in-the-blanks are: Those who don’t want to be vaccinated are afraid of needles, are self-centered, only think of themselves, and not others, and have absolutely no empathy. Not good qualities for someone who interacts with the public every day.
Did the younger deputies have several vaccinations before attending school? Do their children get vaccinated before entering school? Are they responsible for their children’s health? Hopefully, they never bring Covid home. The last thing we want is children getting covid and becoming long-haulers from getting Covid from their mom or dad–or die. I, as the adult (a word that doesn’t seem to apply to many who post in various threads), didn’t want to be vaccinated won’t be a good excuse.
