The safest place to drink is at home, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials, but partiers should always have a designated driver when going out if there’s alcohol involved.

There are multiple options around the Santa Clarita Valley if one cannot drive or does not want to ride with an unsafe driver.

Popular ride sharing apps such as Uber or Lyft are always an option. Just download the app and a driver will arrive at a GPS location. These services charge more for popular times such as holidays. Be prepared to pay a little more than usual.

Riders should expect to pay “surge prices,” which are 1.5X to 3X or more during peak times. Rides are most popular during the hours of midnight and 3 a.m., according to Uber’s website.

That cost is much less than a potential driving under the influence (DUI) arrest.

The cost of a DUI can be anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000, station officials said, with much of the cost and punitive action up to the court.

In an effort to keep the roads safer, AAA is offering a “tipsy tow service” from 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Residents can call 1-800-400-4222 for a free tow home for up to seven miles. Callers simply tell the Auto Club operators, “I need a tipsy tow,” to receive the free tow and ride home.

Keep in mind that the service excludes rides for passengers and is restricted to a one-way, one-time ride for the driver and the destination is limited to the driver’s residence. Reservations are not accepted.

For rides farther than seven miles, drivers can expect to pay the rate charged by the tow truck contractor.

Yellow Cab of Santa Clarita offers rides for drivers 24 hours a day. During peak hours and holidays the wait time can be up to 45 minutes or an hour, according to Yellow Cab.

The rate is the standard for Los Angeles County, with the meter starting at $2.85 and charging an additional $2.70 per mile. These rates do not change during peak hours.

The number for Yellow Cab of Santa Clarita is (661) 260-2227.

Santa Clarita Valley Safe Rides is offering a free, confidential ride home for teenagers under 18 who are not in a condition to drive, and for those who don’t want to ride with an unsafe driver, according to their website.

The free service is being offered on New Year’s Eve from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. and the number to call is (661) 259-6330.

“All of these drunk driving arrests, all of these drunk driving deaths, can be preventable,” said Cary Quashen of founder of the Action Family Counseling, Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center, “Go out and have fun. We are not even telling you not to drink — just don’t drink and drive.”
