The Great ShakeOut Drill Is Complete But Are You Prepared

The Great ShakeOut drill that took place Thursday is an international event that prepares people for an earthquake whether it’s at school, work or home.

With the San Andreas Fault running through the Santa Clarita Valley, officials are offering tips to prepare for when not if the next big one strikes.

When an earthquake strikes there is no time to talk about a plan in the moment, people need to have a plan in place prior.

Those who did not participate in Thursday’s Great ShakeOut drill can still prepare themselves for an earthquake.

Ready.Gov suggests having a three phase plan for earthquakes: Before, during and after an earthquake.

Prepare before an earthquake:

  • Make an emergency plan that includes a location to meet if separated from family members
  • Have an emergency supply kit ready to go
  • Secure heavy items at home or in the workplace such as bookcases, water heaters, refrigerators etc.

During an earthquake:

  • Drop, cover and hold on
  • If outdoors during an earthquake stay outside away from buildings
  • If in a car pull over and stop
  • If in bed cover your head with a pillow while laying on your stomach

After an earthquake:

  • Prepare for aftershocks
  • Get out and away from a damaged building
  • If near a tsunami area get inland
  • Check local news for updates
  • Connect with family to let them know you are okay and to ensure they are okay
  • If trapped send a text, bang on a pipe or wall
