Santa Clarita Clocks To ‘Spring Forward’ For Daylight Saving Time

March 8, 2020, marks the start of Daylight Saving Time, causing clocks across the world to “spring forward” one hour, including those in Santa Clarita.

Despite legal efforts in recent years to abolish the practice in California, Daylight Saving Time has come again, and Santa Clarita residents will set their clocks an hour forward, giving an extra hour of sunshine at the cost of an hour of sleep.

Daylight Saving Time was first proposed back in 1895 by New Zealand scientist George Vernon Hudson and British builder William Willett.

In 1895, Hudson presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society, proposing a two-hour shift forward in October and a two-hour shift back in March, according to Time and Date.

“There was interest in the idea, but it was never followed through,” according to Time and Date.

In 1905, independently from Hudson, Willett suggested setting the clocks ahead 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, and switching them back by the same amount on each of the four Sundays in September, a total of eight time switches per year.

According to Time and Date, the first group of individuals to implement Daylight Savings were the residents of Port Arthur, Ontario in Canada, now known as Thunder Bay. Residents turned their clocks forward by one hour to start the world’s first Daylight Saving Time period on July 1, 1908.

In the following years, different parts of Canada started to follow suit in Daylight Saving Time.

However, the time change did not start to trend globally until 1916, according to officials.

Clocks in the German Empire, and its ally Austria, were turned ahead by one hour on April 30, 1916, two years into World War I, according to Time and Date.

The rationale was to minimize the use of artificial lighting to save fuel for the war effort.

Within a few weeks, the idea was followed by the United Kingdom, France and many other countries.

Most of them reverted to standard time after World War I, and it wasn’t until the next World War that Daylight Saving Time made its return in most of Europe.

Daylight Saving Time is now used in over 70 countries worldwide and affects over 1 billion people every year, with the beginning and end dates varying from one country to another .

In November 2018, California voters passed Proposition 7 by a 60-40 percent margin, paving the way for year-round Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 8 at 2 a.m.

For Santa Clarita residents, Daylight Saving Time will last until Sunday, Nov. 1, when it will end and the clocks will “fall back” one hour.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
