The basketball matchups between the Canyon Cowboys and Valencia Vikings showcased the intense competition within the Foothill League and significantly impacted the league standings for the girls’ and boys’ teams.
In the girls’ game, Valencia delivered a dominant performance, defeating Canyon 75-49 in a matchup between two of the league’s top-ranked teams.
From the opening tip, Valencia established control, outscoring Canyon 24-9 in the first quarter with a strong offensive showing. Canyon struggled to keep pace, adding only 10 points in the second quarter, while Valencia extended their lead with 19. Despite a more balanced third quarter where both teams scored 12 points, Canyon couldn’t make up the deficit. Valencia finished strong in the fourth, outscoring Canyon 20-18 to seal the victory.
Freshman Darby Dunn led the way for Canyon with an impressive individual performance, contributing 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Jasmine Williams added 13 points, and Shannen Wilson chipped in 12, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Valencia’s well-rounded attack.
With this victory, Valencia climbed to second place in the league standings, overtaking Canyon, which dropped to third. The loss was a setback for Canyon, but it highlighted Dunn’s potential as a rising star on the team.
Canyon turned the tables on the boys’ side with a thrilling upset, defeating the top-ranked Valencia team 75-66.
Eric Kubel led Canyon with a game-high 23 points, showcasing his scoring prowess and leadership on the court. He received strong support from Chigozie Osuji, who contributed 16 points, while Noah Madrigal and Isaac Yuhico added 13 and 9 points, respectively, in a balanced team effort.
The victory was a statement win for the third-ranked Canyon boys’ team, shaking up the league standings and proving that rankings don’t always dictate outcomes.
It also underscored the depth and determination of Canyon’s roster, as they executed a game plan that neutralized Valencia’s strengths and capitalized on key moments to secure the win.
These games highlighted the competitiveness of Foothill League basketball, where every matchup can have a ripple effect on the standings. While Valencia’s girls cemented their place as a top contender with a commanding win, Canyon’s boys made a strong case for their potential to challenge the league’s elite as the season progresses.
