The Los Angeles Dodgers (11-6) couldn’t get their trademark high-octane offense going against the San Diego Padres (10-7) at home Monday night and came up short in a 2-1 loss.
The Dodgers looked poised for a big night early on, as they started the game with three consecutive hits from Joc Pederson, Mookie Betts and finally Cody Bellinger, who drove in Pederson for an RBI single. However, they left several potential runs on the board and left the first inning with a 1-0 lead.
Ultimately, it proved to be the Dodgers’ only score of the night as Padres immediately went to their bullpen in the second inning, and L.A. struggled to find the same offensive rhythm the rest of the way.
The Dodgers weren’t without opportunities however, as they managed to load the bases with no outs in the fourth inning, but failed to execute on the opportunity as the Padres managed to escape the inning unscathed.
Dustin May got the pitching start for the Dodgers and made it through the first four innings without giving up a score, but was rocked for a homer in the fifth by catcher Austin Hedges.
In the sixth, with runners on first and second, May gave up an RBI single to Eric Hosmer, who brought in Trent Grisham for the Padres’ go ahead score, 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Dodgers they couldn’t summon the offense necessary to reclaim the lead and took the loss, they’ll have a chance to bounce back in the second game of their four-game series with the Padres at home Tuesday at 6:40 p.m.
