Girls’ Basketball Opening Week Recap

This week marked the beginning of the Santa Clarita Valley girls’ basketball season, and teams are itching to go, ready to either build on last year’s success or start fresh and make amends for past mistakes.

Within the Foothill League, Hart and Valencia stand as the lone teams with a win under their belts.

Valencia (3-0):

The Vikings are off to a strong start, with three wins, one of which was against league foe Golden Valley. In the bout, Valencia routed the Grizzlies 81-13.

Valencia showcased a flurry of strong shooters with two freshmen earning double-digit points. Kamilla Basyrova led the team with 20 points and Alexis Epie had 11 points of her own.

Cara McKell and Jalauni Kitchens made big contributions to the scoreboard with a combined 31 points.

As the offense was sinking all of their shots, Valencia’s defense was having a field day, amounting to 26 steals, five blocks and holding Golden Valley to 13 points.

In Valencia’s other two wins against Pacifica and Oxnard, Basyrova was the star of those games scoring a team high of 20 and 26 points.

The Viking’s next challenger will be Oaks Christian, in the Conejo Valley Tournament, which is set to be played on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Hart (1-1):

Two games into the season, the Hawks have secured one win and suffered one loss.

To open the season, Hart defeated Frontier High School 63-37 in the first round of the Bonita tournament. Team captains Andrea Aina, Morgan Mack and Emery Eav were the stars of the game, scoring a combined 61 points.

Aina was the scoring leader with 26 points followed by Mack with 23 and Eav with 12.

In the next game of the tournament, the Hawks took a 180 turn and lost 63-43. Hart looks to get back on track Friday evening against Claremont.

Canyon (1-1):

To tip off their season Canyon received a tough 66-35 loss to Oak Park. Within the loss the Cowboys had some upside, with Freshman Darby Dunn sinking seven shots for 12 points. Shannen Wilson added to the scoring total with 15 points of her own.

Just one day after their loss, Canyon bounced back with a thrilling 59-56 overtime victory against Village Christian.

Much like the first game, Dunn and Wilson picked up the bulk of the points, with 32 between the pair. Canyon also found some defensive success, racking up nine steals.

The Cowboys are set to take a break before returning to the court on Dec. 2 against Newbury Park.

West Ranch (1-0):

The Wildcats only have one game under their belts, but it was a decisive 53-13 win over Blair High School.

West Ranch looks to keep the momentum going Thursday, Nov. 21, at 4 p.m. against Sherman Oaks CES.

Saugus (0-1):

In Monday’s non-league matchup, Crescenta Valley defeated the hosting Saugus Centurions with a score of 46-34.

Next, the Centurions will turn their focus to a non-league game against Redondo Union. The SeaHawks will be making their season debut with a 0-0 record.

Castaic (0-1):

The Coyotes find themselves in the same boat as Saugus, as they start the season with a tough loss.

Castaic dropped their first game of the season 49-17 against the Arvin Bears.

With a fast-moving season, Castaic has no time to dwell on the loss because they are already set to take the court Thursday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. against the visiting Burbank Bulldogs.

Golden Valley (0-2):

The Golden Valley girls’ basketball team is off to a rough start this season, struggling to find their rhythm with an 0-2 record.

In their season opener on Monday, the Grizzlies faced a tough challenge against Oaks Christian, suffering a lopsided 62-22 defeat at home.

Golden Valley’s struggles continued on Tuesday when they hosted the Valencia Vikings.

The Vikings showcased their offensive and defensive prowess, cruising to an 81-13 victory and improving to 2-0 on the season.

The Grizzlies, now 0-2, will look to regroup as they host Oxnard on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m..

Santa Clarita Christian School (1-0):

The Cardinals are off to a hot start with a commanding 62-22 win over St. Monica Academy. SCCS hopes to keep the momentum going Thursday’s game against Paraclete at 5:30 p.m.

Trinity (0-1):

The Knights have gotten off to a rocky start following a 58-29 loss to Kennedy High School. Trinity has hope that they will turn things around when they face Milken High School on Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
