The Santa Clarita Valley’s Foothill League girls’ basketball season has had an exciting start, showcasing strong performances and emerging trends among the teams.
Hart, Canyon, and West Ranch secured victories in their league openers, setting a strong tone for the season. However, with nearly two months of games still ahead, these teams face the challenge of either solidifying their positions as top contenders or potentially losing momentum as competition intensifies.
Hart (4-1, 1-0) vs. Valencia (5-1, 0-1):
The Hart girls’ basketball team dominated Valencia in a decisive matchup, showcasing their offensive power and defensive prowess throughout all four quarters.
Hart came out strong in the first quarter, overwhelming Valencia with a commanding 22-6 start. Hart maintained their momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Valencia 15-13 and taking a comfortable lead into halftime.
After the break, Valencia tallied 11 points in the third quarter, but Hart continued their steady offensive output, scoring 14 points to maintain their lead. The fourth quarter was no different, as Hart capped off the game with another 14-point quarter while holding Valencia to just five points.
Hart’s ability to sustain their intensity across all four quarters proved pivotal in securing this convincing victory.
Canyon (3-1, 1-0) vs. Saugus (1-4, 0-1):
Canyon pulled off a thrilling 47-46 overtime victory against Saugus in a highly competitive Foothill League matchup.
Saugus started strong, taking a 17-12 lead in the first quarter, but Canyon’s defense tightened in the second, holding Saugus to just six points and closing the gap to 23-19 by halftime. Canyon turned the tide in the third quarter, outscoring Saugus 11-5 to take the lead. However, Saugus fought back in the fourth, scoring 10 points to Canyon’s 8, forcing the game into overtime at 38 a piece.
In the overtime period, Canyon edged out Saugus 9-8, with crucial plays from their standout players securing the win.
Junior Shannen Wilson led Canyon with an impressive 20 points and three steals, dominating both offensively and defensively. Freshman Darby Dunn also made a significant impact, contributing 12 points and two steals, proving her value as a rising star on the team.
This win highlights Canyon’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure, solidifying their presence as a strong contender in the league.
The Cowboys look to keep the ball rolling Friday when they take on West Ranch at 5 p.m. At the same time, Saugus will host Valencia as both teams play for their first league win of the season.
West Ranch (4-2, 1-0) vs. Castaic (2-4, 0-1):
West Ranch secured a decisive 42-21 victory over the Castaic Coyotes in their Foothill League opener, building momentum as they aim to establish themselves as league contenders. Coming off a solid 43-34 win against North Hollywood, the Wildcats carried their winning energy into the matchup against Castaic, showcasing strong defense and balanced scoring.
The Coyotes, on the other hand, struggled to find an offensive rhythm. This loss marks their second straight defeat after a narrow 35-33 setback against Santa Barbara earlier in the week. Despite their challenges, Castaic remains determined to regroup and will look to bounce back in their next league game against Golden Valley on Friday.
West Ranch now turns its attention to a high-stakes clash against a red-hot Canyon team on Friday evening. With Canyon riding the momentum of a dramatic overtime win, the Wildcats will need to bring their best performance to keep their winning streak alive.
