William S. Hart High School alumn Derek Waldeck was drafted in the third round, 66th overall, of the 2020 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft by F.C. Dallas on Monday night.

Waldeck graduated from Hart High in 2016 and spent the last four years playing as a midfielder for Stanford University in Palo Alto.

In his time at Hart, Waldeck immediately made a splash, as he picked up back-to-back All-Foothill League first team and All-Santa Clarita Valley first-team honors in his freshman and sophomore years. 

As a sophomore, his play even helped propel the team to a Foothill League title in 2014 and a trip to the CIF quarterfinals.

Waldeck continued to play club soccer during his Hart career as well, initially with FC Los Angeles in 2012, followed by SCV Magic in 2013.

In 2014, however, Waldeck began to focus on his club play, and spent two seasons with Real So Cal Academy, where he started all 34 matches in which he played for Real So Cal in 2015, according to his Stanford bio.

His skills were enough to earn Waldeck a spot on the Stanford Cardinal men’s soccer team, where he was part of two national championship teams in 2016 and 2017.

Waldeck proved to be a capable passer for Stanford, as he racked up 22 assists over his college career, according to Stanford records. 

He particularly came into his own his senior year, when Waldeck finished with eight assists and four of his six career goals.

Waldeck was recognized for his play as a senior with selections to the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region First Team and the All-Pac-12 First Team.

The FC Dallas team Waldeck is expected to join had a 13-12-9 record last season and finished seventh in the Western Conference.
