The Hart girls soccer team lost 2-1 at home in their Division 1 playoff opener against Centennial on Thursday.
The loss made for a disappointing end after a highly successful regular season in which the Indians went 20-2-3, and didn’t lose a single match in Foothill League play.
“It was a very good season, we won league again, so we accomplished our first goal,” said Hart head coach Guilherme Mitrovitch. “Our second goal was to make a CIF run and we failed in that one.”
On Thursday, Hart wasn’t able to muster the offense that had come so readily earlier in the season, much to the credit of the Centennial goalkeeper.
Centennial struck first, as they scored with 26 minutes to play in the opening half, but Hart answered right back one minute later with a rocket from Sienna Frie to tie things up going into halftime, 1-1.
Hart had a chance to take the lead with 14 minutes to play in the game when Sarah Melvin had the opportunity to take a penalty kick for her team.
Melvin made solid contact and placed the ball well, but the Centennial goalkeeper came up with a huge save to keep it all tied up.
Shortly after the missed opportunity, Centennial was able to score the deciding goal off of a corner kick that turned into a scrum in front of the goal until the ball found its way into the net off a rebound.
Hart showed their heart down the stretch as they furiously tried to rally back for a tying score, but couldn’t create the right opportunity and lost 2-1.
