Hart Stays Undefeated In Foothill League After Thrilling Victory Over Golden Valley

Hart (4-2, 2-0) defeated Golden Valley in a back-and-forth affair Friday night at Cougar Stadium. Hart’s Matix Frithsmith was the standout performer, scoring three touchdowns from 10, 13, and 12 yards out.

Despite his big contribution in the Hawks’ 40-28 win over Golden Valley (2-4, 1-1), Frithsmith credited his teammates for putting him in position to succeed.

“I’m just really proud of my guys on offense for just playing unselfish football, getting people the ball that they know can make plays. Josh Rogozik had great kickout blocks, our offensive line was really good and kept powering down,” said Frithsmith.

Hart head coach Jake Goossen-Brown echoed Frithsmith’s sentiment, saying: “Having a guy like Josh Rogozik who can flip and flop with [Frithsmith] is really awesome.”

Frithsmith may have been the difference maker, but the game began with Hart marching down the field and capping off the opening drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Paisano to Silas Tucker, giving the Hawks a quick 7-0 lead.

Golden Valley’s offense stalled on its opening drive due to a string of penalties. However, the defense responded with more energy on the following possession, putting Hart in a third-and-25 situation. The Grizzlies capitalized by forcing a punt.

Golden Valley eventually found the end zone in the second quarter on a four-yard rush by Derek Guvara, tying the game at 7-7.

Before the half, Frithsmith added two more scores rushing in from 10 and 13 yards to give Hart a 20-7 lead at the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Hawks kept their momentum going. Paisano connected with Michael Toner for a 28-yard touchdown. Attempting to make up for a missed PAT earlier, Hart went for a two-point conversion but came up short, extending their lead to 26-7.

Despite the deficit, Golden Valley didn’t fold. Quarterback Jayce Johnson made plays through the air and on the ground, including a three-yard rushing touchdown to cut into the lead.

Just as the Grizzlies were gaining momentum, Frithsmith punched in his third touchdown of the night, extending Hart’s lead to 33-14 with under two minutes left in the third quarter.

However, Golden Valley didn’t let up. Zeelen Shatswell intercepted Paisano and Johnson quickly turned the turnover into points with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Ace Frias. On the ensuing kickoff, the Grizzlies recovered a successful onside kick.

With the pressure mounting, Johnson scrambled for a 22-yard touchdown on fourth and long, bringing Golden Valley within five points at 33-28.

With just over seven minutes remaining, the Grizzlies attempted another onside kick, but this time, Hart capitalized. Bailey Hill scooped up the kick and returned it for a touchdown, effectively sealing the game at 40-28.

Just one week earlier, Hill made the game-clinching interception in Hart’s Foothill League opener against Saugus. Coach Goossen-Brown praised Hill for his clutch performance in back-to-back weeks.

“That was awesome. Bailey Hill made a hell of a play,” said Goossen-Brown. “That’s two weeks in a row he’s come up with a big clutch play in the fourth quarter.”

Goossen-Brown also credited the defense for coming up with a crucial stop that allowed the offense to run out the clock.

While Hart came away with the win, Goossen-Brown acknowledged Golden Valley’s strong second half and the need for improvement.

“We have to get back to the drawing board, and I have to find a way to make sure we continue to play the way we did in the first half, in the second half,” said Goossen-Brown.

Hart will look to play a complete four quarters next week when they take on West Ranch on the road, Friday at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Golden Valley will aim to bounce back on a short week when they host Castaic Thursday night.
