In the KHTS game of the week Golden Valley (2-2) had their two game winning streak broken in a 35-14 loss against Garfield (3-1).
Despite only scoring 14 points the Grizzlies had multiple opportunities inside the redzone that were not capitalized on.
“That was a very well coached Garfield team, with good size upfront, a great running back, an elusive quarterback and a pretty good defense,” said Golden Valley Head Coach Dan Kelley. “Hats off to Garfield, we are a good football team, so are they but they were just the better team tonight.”
On their first drive Garfield’s offense blew past the Golden Valley defense with ease and ended it in the end zone to take a 7-0 lead.
The Grizzlies sharped things up on offense and fed Isaiah Orozco, who leads the Foothill League in rushing yards.

When Golden Valley was in striking distance they fed Orozco one more time to tie the game 7-7.
However the Bulldogs were not pleased with a tie game and on their first play of offense gave the ball to Damian Cornejo who ran 79 yards to the house to take a 14-7 lead.
With 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter Golden Valley was forced to punt the ball to a Garfield offense who was hungry for another touchdown.
To the grizzlies delight the punt was muffed and Golden Valley recovered the ball on Garfield’s 25 yard line.
On the 14 yard line Golden Valley’s Brandon Conteras setback to pass and was picked off by Garfield’s Jayden Garcia.
The Bulldogs went back to their work horse Cornejo and he muscled his way for 58 yards in just two runs.
In the red zone the Bulldogs decided to give Cornejo a break and handed the ball off to Robert Sanchez who hammered his way into the end zone to extend their lead 21-7.
On 4th and 10 the Grizzlies were desperate to get points on the board and opted to take a shot at a conversion but Golden Valley would be unsuccessful.
With under a minute left in the half Garfield’s Dominic Vasquez threw a touchdown pass to Garcia, to extend their lead 28-7.
In need of a big play, Golden Valley returner Sean Gomez, flipped the Grizzlies field position by running the kickoff all the way to Garfield’s own eight yard line.
The Grizzlies had a Golden opportunity to score some points before going into the half but the Bulldog’s defense stood strong and denied Golden Valley of any success
Riding the wave of momentum Garfield came out in the second half and gave Cornejo the ball to score his third touchdown of the night, making it a 35-7 game.
Late in the third quarter the Golden Valley offense found a rhythm and ended the drive with Orozco scoring his second touchdown of the night.
Neither team would find the end zone in the fourth quarter making the final score 35-14.
With the preseason officially over, the Grizzlies set their target on the Castaic Coyotes.
“Looking at their (Castaic) record 3-1, obviously they are coaching the heck out of those kids over there and the kids are responding and they are winning some football games,” said Kelley. “We have also won some football games and we are sitting at 2-2 but we have played one heck of a four game series in our preseason.”
Golden Valley and Castaic are set to face off Thursday Sept. 14, with kickoff beginning at 7 p.m.
