Santa Clarita High School Football Preview: October 27 – 29, 2022

The regular season is at its end and football teams around the Santa Clarita Valley are battling for playoff considerations and to end the season with a win.

Here are this week’s match-ups:

Canyon (3-6) @ Valencia (4-5)

Canyon High School will be making their way down to Valencia High School to face off against the Vikings as the season comes to a close. Canyon will be on the road after a tough loss against Saugus last week. Standing at 6th in the league, the Cowboys are looking to improve their skills and end the season on a good note with a win over Valencia. The Cowboys have really worked on their running game, as running back Gannisten Turner ranks #1 on the Foothill League rushing yards leaderboards with 632 yards.

The Vikings have had a tough season recently, going on a 2-game losing streak after losing in a close game against Hart. Valencia also seems to shine when it comes to their running game with running back Daniel Hernandez is ranking 3rd in the Foothill League rushing yards leaderboard with 521 yards. This game against the Cowboys will bring the Viking’s season to a close as they rank 5th in the Foothill League. The Vikings are set to host the Cowboys on Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Castaic (2-7) vs. Hart (3-6)

The Castaic Coyotes will be facing off against the Hart Indians in a home game at Valencia High School on Thursday. This game will bring the Coyotes’ first full season to a close. The Coyotes have not had the easiest season, but their determination has not yet withered. The Coyotes have shown a promising future in the Foothill League, as head coach Anthony Uebelhardt leads these kids through their first full scheduled season ever since the school opened their doors.

The Hart Indians had a tremendous victory against the Vikings last week with a game-ending winning touchdown pass from quarterback Timmy Larkins to wide receiver Shawn Irwin. After that cinematic catch, Hart swarmed the field in celebration of their victory. Wide Receiver Shawn Irwin has proved his dominance on the field, ranking #20 in the state of California receiving yards leaderboard with 1,003 yards. Castaic is set to host Hart at Valencia High School on Thursday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Golden Valley (6-3) @ Saugus (7-2)

Bringing the season to a ceremonious close, the Saugus Centurions will be hosting the Golden Valley Grizzlies for one last face off in the 2022 season. The Grizzlies will be on the road, coming off a well rested bye week before facing off against Saugus. The Grizzlies are ranked 3rd in the Foothill League and came very close to being League champions, before West Ranch won the title outright. The Grizzlies are looking towards the possibility of going to the playoffs, but for now, they want to end the season on a good note with a victory over Saugus.

The Saugus Centurions ranked 2nd in the league and were certainly runner ups to win the League championship, but they fell short to West Ranch who remained undefeated this season. The Centurions will be heading into this game following a 45-7 victory over Canyon where quarterback TJ Cataldi was able to work with his offense to get the dominant win. Running backs Deohn Turner and Vinny Gallagher worked beautifully together as they led their team to victory with a combined 92 rushing yards against Canyon. Golden Valley will face off against the Centurions in their last game of the 2022 season on Friday at Canyon High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Santa Clarita Christian (5-3) vs. Frazier Mountain (4-5)

The Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals will be closing up their 2022 season in a non-league matchup against Frazier Mountain. The Cardinals have had an impressive season, ranking 3rd in the Liberty (8-man) league. The Cardinals have had a great season on paper as quarterback Cayden Rappleye shines in 10th place on the passing yards leaderboards in California. Last week’s game against Milken was a phenomenal success as they scored 54 points.

Frazier Mountain will also be closing out their season with this game against the Cardinals. The Frazier Mountain Falcons are also coming off a 42-0 victory as they beat the Coastal Christian Conquerors, not letting them get on the scoreboard. Santa Clarita is set to host Frazier Mountain at Canyon High School on Saturday with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m.

Trinity Classical Academy (3-5) vs. Western Christian (4-5)

The Trinity Classical Academy Knights are set to host the Western Christian Fighting Lancers as their 2022 season comes to an end. Trinity did not have the season they were hoping for as the Knights were unable to get a victory in either one of their league games. Trinity stands in 6th place in the Mesquite League with a 0-4 record. Trinity had a devastating loss last week against Capistrano Valley Christian as they were kept out of the end zone and unable to score the entire game. Trinity is hopeful this last game will go differently as their last league game of the season.

Western Christian is ranked 4th in the Mesquite League with only one league game win under their belt. Their recent loss against Linfield Christian left them in the dust as they too were unable to even get on the board for the entire game. Going on a 3-game losing streak, Western Christian is looking to break their streak this week against Trinity as the season comes to an end. Trinity Classical Academy is set to host Western Christian on Friday at College of the Canyons with kickoff set for 5 p.m.

Bye: West Ranch (10-0)

The West Ranch Wildcats take a well deserved bye week to rest after an outright victory for the Foothill League Championship after defeating Castaic and scoring an impressive 63 points. West Ranch is now one of the six undefeated football teams in the Southland with a 10-0 record. Quarterback Ryan Staub proves his resilience on the field, ranking 17th in California’s passing yards leaderboard with 2,406 yards. In addition to that accomplishment, Staub is also ranked 15th in California’s total yards leaderboard with a total of 2,689 yards. This is the school’s first ever Foothill League Championship, making history for the school and proving their dominance in the Santa Clarita Valley.
