Saugus Ends The Season On A High Over The Grizzlies

The Saugus Centurions (8-2, 5-1) get a 31-13 victory over the Golden Valley Grizzlies (6-4, 3-3) to close out the season, but the Centurions are not done yet as they prepare for the CIF playoffs.

Saugus started off strong with a fumble recovery on the punt from wide receiver Gage Sheklow to start the game.

Saugus is first on the board as wide receiver AJ Goodman gets a 10-yard carry into the end zone for a touchdown with 9:12 minutes left in the first quarter, making the score 7-0.

The Grizzlies don’t stay off the board for too long as quarterback Christopher Melkonian scrambles into the end zone for a touchdown making the score 14-7 with 2:09 minutes left in the first quarter.

Starting the 2nd quarter off right, the Centurion defensive linebacker Anthony Torres gets an assisted sack on the Grizzlies with the help of fellow linebacker Matthew Stirwelt to put a stop to the offensive drive.

The Saugus defense played such a pivotal part in this victory, and when head coach Jason Bornn was asked about the team’s dynamic, he said, “we focused on taking care of our jobs, making sure we take care of what we need to do and fit into whatever place they’re going to run.”

Quarterback TJ Cataldi recorded a touchdown of his own with a scramble late in the first half putting Saugus up, 14-7.

When coach Bornn was asked about Cataldi’s progression over the course of the young quarterbacks journey as a Centurion, Bornn said, “for a guy who didn’t play quarterback at all last year for us, and compete and earn the position and do what he’s done so far, is just nothing short of spectacular.”

Golden Valley quarterback Christopher Melkonian had a good game as well, proving his confidence in moving around in the pocket and showing he is not afraid to scramble for that first down.

Melkonian had a highlight 60-yard run in the 3rd quarter evading the Saugus defense.

Wrapping up the game in the 4th quarter, tight-end Dario Sandoval ran in a 1-yard carry to bring the score to 31-13.

Saugus head coach Jason Bornn was able to speak on the team’s next stop to the CIF playoffs saying they want to focus on “getting healthy and back to basics.”
