Multiple Santa Clarita high school football players were recognized with awards at the National Preps Collegiate Showcase in Santa Clarita on Saturday.

West Ranch quarterback Walker Eget was named as Quarterback Co-MVP, Valencia receiver Zamondre Merriweather took home Class of 2022 Co-MVP honors and Saugus quarterback Colton Fitzgerald was recognized as one of the Co-Breakout Prospects of the camp.

The event was the third such showcase conducted by National Preps this year as a way to adapt to the existing circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic to give an opportunity for players to show their skills and for college programs to scout players who otherwise wouldn’t be on display with competition on hiatus across much of California.

The showcase runs players through a number of physical assessments typically seen at combines, such as the 40-yard dash and broad jump as well as position-specific drills.

After the showcase, National Preps Showcase staff and coaches vote to determine the MVPs of the event.

Awards are given out based on a variety of classifications, including position, class and overall MVP.

The pair of local senior quarterbacks recognized, Quarterback Co-MVP Eget and Co-Breakout Prospect Fitzgerald, both hope to add another chapter to the accomplished history of Santa Clarita quarterbacks at the collegiate level.

However, currently Eget is committed to San Jose State University while Fitzgerald has yet to receive a scholarship offer.

Eget is listed as a three-star recruit by 24/7 Sports and finished his Junior season in 2019 with 3,250 yards on a 57.9 percent completion rate (220-380), 40 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 games played.

Fitzgerald meanwhile, in his ten games in 2019 completed 52.7 percent of his passes (167-317) for 2,231 yards, 17 touchdowns and ten interceptions, he added another three scores on the ground as well.

The quarterbacks weren’t the only ones representing Santa Clarita as award-winners at the showcase, with Merriweather earning the only award for a local skill position athlete.

Merriweather was a member of Valencia’s varsity squad as a sophomore in 2019 and was an important contributor to their receiving core.

In nine games played in 2019, Merriweather pulled in 32 catches for 533 yards and five touchdowns.

Now a Junior, Merriweather has already drawn scholarship offers from New Mexico State and the University of Maryland, but has not committed to either as of Tuesday.

Merriweather wasn’t the only Valencia receiver to garner praise from National Preps, as fellow junior Duhron Goodman was highlighted during the showcase as one of the top-14 wide receivers at the event and was in the running for MVP at the position.

The full list of award winners is available from one of National Prep Showcases’ partners, 24/7 Sports, here.
