The girls’ volleyball teams in the Santa Clarita Valley were quite active over the weekend as they prepared to play in the second round of their respective playoff brackets.
Five teams entered Saturday’s heated round of games, but only three emerged victorious.
Saugus Sweeps Aliso Niguel
The Centurions sweep the Wolverines 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 in the second round of the Division 2 CIF playoff bracket.
With the Centurions’ success, the Wolverines kept the game tight, forcing Saugus to dig deep to pull off the sweep.
With 18 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks, Leila Ballard maintained her dominating trend on the court.
Adjoining Ballard in the blocking efforts was Katelyn Nelson, who had three blocks, and Ayden Jacobson, who had a pair of her own.
Gabriella Cascione led the Centurions with 23 digs that set up the team to tally 39 kills.
Saugus’s next game is set to be played on Oct. 30 against Santa Margarita.
Valencia Downs Moorpark
Since their win against Canyon on Oct. 10, the Vikings have been undefeated, beating teams a combined 12 sets to one.
Against the Moorpark Musketeers, Valencia completed the game in three sets in a competitive match-up.
Valencia won the first set 25-22, but as the game continued, the Vikings played better and closed out the second set 25-20. To finish the match, Valencia won by their largest margin of 25-16.
Valencia looks to continue their winning streak Wednesday when they challenge Palm Desert in the quarter-finals.
Canyon Holds Off St. Anthony
The Cowboys’ route to the playoffs is similar to Valencia’s in that both teams have gone undefeated since Oct. 10 and have kept their opponents at bay in tight playoff games.
Canyon battled throughout the first set and came out on top 25-22.
Canyon’s momentum continued into the second set, and they widened their margin by winning the set 25-17.
In the final set, St. Anthony started to rally, but their effort was not enough, and the Cowboys walked away with a 25-20 win in the third set to pull off a 3-0 sweep.
Canyon aims to do the same to Flintridge Prep on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the quarter-finals.
West Ranch Falls In The Fifth Set
West Ranch’s season came to a halt Saturday after falling to Murrieta Valley three sets to two.
The Wildcats started the game off strong, winning the first set 25-21. However, they lost the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-17.
With the game on the line, West Ranch minted a surge of energy to win the fourth set 25-18 and force a fifth set.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, their efforts were not enough, and they eventually lost the deciding set 15-9.
In the back-and-forth match, freshman Devyn Kobe hit 21 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Another contributor to the team’s success with eight blocks, digs and kills, plus 35 assists, was junior setter Dani Clewis. In the previous game, Clewis set a team record as the all-time assists leader.
