Santa Clarita High School Boys Volleyball

Valencia had its CIF-SS Division 2 tournament run ended in the quarterfinals Saturday night at Burroughs High School. It’s a strong showing for a team who entered the competition with a 16-20 record.

It’s on to the semis for Valencia’s crosstown rival, No. 4 West Ranch. The Wildcats were pushed by South in Game 1 (25-22), but found their form in the final two games for the sweep.

The biggest match of the year is at Oak Park on Wednesday, where West Ranch will face the No. 1 team in the division. Neither Oak Park nor West Ranch has conceded a game in the playoffs, and Oak Park is riding a 22-game wining streak.

COC Softball

Canyons competed tough in the Southern California Super Regional over the weekend, but Mt. San Antonio proved to tough a task to overcome.

The Cougars dropped the first game against Mt. SAC, 3-1, and came back the next day to beat Santa Barbara 11-7 to stave off elimination which set up the second showdown with Mt. SAC.

And things got away from COC early and the lack of depth in starting pitching finally caught up to the team. Ashley Russo (26-11 record in 37 starts) was roughed up in the first inning for seven runs before tossing six shutout innings thereafter, but the damage had been exacted. Canyons got one back in the fifth inning before being eliminated with a 7-1 loss.

College of the Canyons finishes the season 32-14 and Western State Conference champions.

TMC Baseball

The 2016 GSAC Tournament Champions will head back up the coast to Westmont College in Santa Barbara for the opening round of the NAIA Tournament.

Santa Barbara Bracket has teams seeded 1-5, and the Mustangs fall right in the middle of the pack at No. 3. They face No. 2 Madonna (Mich) Tuesday at 12:30 PM.

LA Dodgers

The Dodgers (20-18) fell in Prime Time last night against the Cardinals, 5-2, bringing their record on this current homestand to 4-3.

Los Angeles took 2 of 3 over the weekend against St. Louis, and Corey Seager had his coming out party against the NL Central power.

The 22-year-old shortstop accounted for all of the Dodgers scoring Sunday, grabbing his first career multi-homer game. Add those two to Saturday’s blast and Seager has three in his last two games (six on the season).

Monday the Dodgers welcome the Angels to town for the first of the annual four-game Freeway Series. First pitch is at 7:10 form Dodger Stadium, listen to every pitch on your hometown station, AM-1220 KHTS.
