Santa Clarita High School Football
There were two big moves of note for the Foothill League in regards to the CIF-SS West Valley Division poll this week.
After climbing to their highest spot in the rankings of the season at No. 6 last week, the Hart Indians (7-2) fell out of the top ten completely this week.
Entering the top ten for the first time this season are the Valencia Vikings (6-3), winners of four straight games.
Both Hart and Saugus (5-4) were listed as others receiving votes.
Two straight losses for Santa Clarita Christian (6-3) wasn’t enough to drop them from the East Valley Division poll. They remain tied for 10th with Capistrano Valley Christian, and are still in the thick of the playoff race with one game left on the schedule.
Santa Clarita High School Volleyball
It’s the final day of the regular season for Foothill League girls’ volleyball, and there is a major crosstown rivalry to settle the league champion.
Fresh off a strong showing in the Redondo Power Classic tournament over the weekend, No. 5 Valencia (up two spots in the Division 1A poll) travels across town to old foe Hart.
While Valencia already owns at least a share of the title, they will split it with Hart if the Indians can pull the upset, today. First serve is at 5:30 PM.
West Ranch has the opportunity to finish with a winning record in the Foothill League and earn a playoff berth with a win over Golden Valley. The Wildcats have won two straight matches, while the Grizzlies have dropped two straight.
Canyon has one final shot at their first Foothill League win of the season today, a road contest against the Saugus Centurions. Saugus will attempt to keep their rival from getting on the board.
The Master’s College
Two Saturday’s in a row the Mustangs’ soccer team has needed extra time heroics for one-goal victories.
This past Saturday’s 2-1 extra time victory at Hope International included more than just a win; TMC finished in 3rd place in the GSAC and earned a home GSAC Tournament date this Friday with San Diego Christian.
Home games in the GSAC tournament are crucial to advancing, and the Mustangs are 6-1-1 at home this season.
The Lady Mustangs’ also picked up a win at Hope International Saturday, securing a home GSAC Tournament match for both soccer teams.
TMC will open the tournament against Menlo College at Reese Field next Saturday, where the Mustangs are a strong 6-2 on the year.
Mustangs’ volleyball took part in the NAIA Match of the Week Saturday night on the road at No. 7 Vanguard, and it wasn’t pretty. TMC lost in straight sets for the second consecutive match, and now look to the last match of the season this coming Saturday against Hope International.
Los Angeles Lakers
Head coach Byron Scott sent Kobe Bryant home from practice yesterday to get away from basketball for a day and refresh himself with his family.
The Lakers legendary scoring guard has been pitiful in the first three games of the season, and has taken nearly as many shots (51) as total passes he has completed (52). By his own admission, Bryant stated after the recent loss that he “sucks right now”, and has been hyper critical of his play.
He and the rest of the Lakers must strip everything down and play basic, fundamental basketball instead of trying to make the herculean play. Scott must play the rookies in their natural positions, and live with the growing pains.
As for Kobe: put the ball in D’Angelo Russell’s hands and let him learn how to run an NBA offense.
The Lakers are back at Staples Center tonight for home game #3 of the season against the Denver Nuggets. Tipoff is at 7:30PM.
