Santa Clarita Sports Weekend Recap – February 3

Check out a recap of all the latest Santa Clarita sports news from around the valley this weekend.

Boys Basketball

Hart (16-10, 6-2) battled back from an early deficit to pick up a 60-55 win over their historic rival Canyon (13-13, 3-5) on Friday night at home. Point guard Dillion Barrientos led the way for the Indians, contributing in all facets of the game and finishing with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Valencia (21-5, 7-1) bounced back from their first league loss since 2018 with a huge win at home over West Ranch (12-13, 3-5), 80-49. The Wildcats were able to hang with Valencia in the first quarter, but the Vikings started to get hot and never looked back as they cruised their way to the 31-point win.

Saugus (17-8, 5-3) was all over Golden Valley (5-18, 0-8) from tip-off, limiting the Grizzlies to only two points in the first quarter. The Centurions poured in a huge 32-point second quarter to firmly take control of the game on their way to a 62-28 win on the road.

Girls Basketball

West Ranch (1-15, 0-8) struggled to contain Valencia (16-10, 6-2) on Friday, as the Vikings raced out to a big lead in the first half and never looked back on their way to a dominant 69-23 win. The Valencia defense was sweltering; they applied a full-court press throughout the first half and the Wildcats couldn’t find an answer.

After trading buckets all night, Canyon (18-8, 5-3) weathered a late push by Hart (11-11, 4-4) and made timely shots to come up with a 54-53 win over the Indians. Canyon forward Chidinma Okafor did most of the damage for her team, pouring in 32 points that night and sealing the deal at the free-throw line late in the game.

Saugus (21-4, 8-0) kept their unbeaten Foothill League season alive as they breezed to a 63-15 win over Golden Valley (8-14, 1-7) on Friday. Now the Centurions have two more opponents to get through to complete their undefeated league run, a match on Tuesday with Canyon and finally with Hart on Friday.

Girls Soccer

Hart (18-1-3, 7-0-1) has returned to form and ripped off three wins in a row after Saugus played them to a draw, with their most recent win coming Friday against Canyon (2-8-3, 2-4-2), 2-1. Canyon’s defense kept the game competitive, but a second-half goal for Hart sealed the deal.

Saugus (8-6-3, 3-0-5) came up with a 2-1 win over Golden Valley (4-9-3, 0-6-2) on Friday. Saugus has played tough defense all season, with five of their Foothill League matchups ending in ties. Friday was no different defensively, but this time the Centurions found the offense to leave the pitch with a win.

It was looking like West Ranch (9-7-4, 3-2-3) was on their way to a win in the first half of their matchup with Valencia (4-7-6, 0-3-5), as they jumped out to a two-point lead by the 30th minute. The Vikings weren’t going down without a fight, however, and settled down in the second half, finding a way to drive in two goals within five minutes late in the second half to force a tie.

The Master’s University

Women’s Basketball: Master’s (22-1, 10-1) have rebounded from their first loss of the season to rip off three dominant wins in a row. Saturday they picked up a 67-48 win over Arizona Christian University behind an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double from Stephanie Soares. The Mustangs will look to keep the momentum going at home against Menlo College on Thursday.

Men’s Basketball: The Mustangs (17-5, 7-4) have stumbled recently, dropping two games in a row, including most recently against Arizona Christian University on Saturday. They’ll look to try and turn things around on Thursday against Menlo College.

College of the Canyons

Women’s Basketball: Canyons (9-12, 4-4) continue to have an up-and-down season, but were outclassed on Saturday against Antelope Valley College in an 82-56 loss. The Cougars couldn’t contain Antelope Valley’s offense, as they poured on the points from behind the arc. Canyons will have to shake off the loss as they go on the road to face Santa Monica City College.

Men’s Basketball: The Cougars (9-11, 2-6) haven’t been able to get into a groove this season and consistently pick up wins. After a dramatic road win over No. 14 West L.A. College last weekend, Canyons dropped back-to-back home games against conference opponents. They’ll look to right the ship as the regular season winds down and they go back on the road to face Santa Monica City College.

Valencia Flyers

The Flyers have been on a little bit of a downward spiral lately, and things didn’t get any better last week when they faced the Fresno Monsters in three consecutive games. The Flyers were beaten three straight times, 12-5, 12-5 and 12-4, as they proved simply unable to hang with the Monsters’ elite offense. Despite his team not getting in the win column, Flyers forward Leon Biller had a very productive week offensively, scoring six goals and getting four assists.
