After a competitive first quarter that ended with Saugus (5-2, 1-2) clinging to a 10-6 lead over Canyon, the Centurions surged in the second half, scoring 31 unanswered points to secure a 48-20 victory.
Saugus Head Coach Jason Bornn praised Canyon’s effort despite the loss, emphasizing the high level of competition in the Foothill League.
“We’re fighting to extend our season beyond league play,” said Bornn. “So every game that you play in the Foothill League is critical.”
Bornn credited Canyon’s (1-5, 1-1) execution for the early challenge his team faced.
“Canyon is a very well-coached team. They do what they do and they do it extremely well,” said Bornn. “They’ve got some talented running backs. They’ve got a quarterback that’s scrappy and receivers that do some good things. Every week is going to be like this. We don’t expect any game to be easy; we don’t take anyone for granted.”
Canyon showed promise early, exploiting the Saugus defense with a 40-plus yard touchdown run — only for it to be erased by a holding penalty. The call cost the Cowboys dearly, forcing them to punt instead of putting points on the board.
Saugus responded quickly. Running back Ty Hall capped off a methodical drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing kickoff, Canyon again showcased its explosiveness, returning the ball 50 yards.
Minutes later, another touchdown was called back due to penalties. This time, however, the Cowboys overcame the setback, finishing the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Semaj Richardson. A missed PAT left Saugus holding a slim 7-6 lead.

With just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Saugus extended their lead with a 49-yard field goal, going up 10-6.
Canyon kept coming. Early in the second quarter, Richardson found the end zone again on a 6-yard touchdown run, giving the Cowboys a 13-10 lead.

But Saugus quickly regained control midway through the second quarter. Quarterback Jake Nuttall connected with Landon Lattimore for a 4-yard touchdown, then found Mackyle Diaz from 13 yards out to make it 24-13.

A 30-yard field goal just before halftime gave the Centurions a 27-13 advantage at the break.
The second half was all Saugus. Opening with possession, the Centurions struck again as receiver Matt Long lined up in the wildcat formation and rushed in from five yards out, extending the lead to 34-13.

Later in the third quarter, Nuttall connected with Lattimore once again — this time for a toe-tap touchdown in the back of the end zone, Lattimore’s second score of the night.

Reflecting on the dominant second half, Bornn attributed it to disciplined execution.
“It comes down to us executing, 99% of the time for every team that is playing a game, whether it’s offense, defense, or special teams, it’s going to come down to your execution,” said Bornn. “If you don’t execute, you’re shooting your own foot and that’s not taking any credit away from [Canyon], they did a very good job.”
Looking ahead, Saugus will return home to host West Ranch on Friday at 7 p.m., but the mindset remains unchanged.
“Again, every week the way we approach it is a playoff game every single week,” said Bornn. “We don’t take anyone for granted; we don’t take anyone lightly. We will continue to prepare and do all the things that we can do to be successful.”
Canyon will hit the road next week, traveling to face Valencia on Friday at 7 p.m.
