Foothill League girls’ basketball tipped off Tuesday night, and West Ranch, Canyon and Saugus all delivered dominant victories to open league play.
Valencia was the only team idle and will begin its league schedule on Friday.
West Ranch (7-1, 1-0) Cruises Past Golden Valley (4-3, 0-1)
West Ranch rolled to a 50-26 win over Golden Valley, nearly doubling the Grizzlies’ scoring output.
Golden Valley’s season has been defined by close contests, with all losses decided by eight points or fewer- except Tuesday’s defeat. They also boast one of the youngest rosters with eight underclassmen on the team.
Freshman Brighton Blythe led the Grizzlies with 13 points, followed by fellow freshman Thempsey Austin-Pugh with six. Junior Krysta Ezenwa grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Golden Valley returns to tournament play Thursday against Triumph Charter, while West Ranch aims to extend its four-game win streak Friday at Castaic.
Canyon (3-4, 1-0) Rolls Over Hart (1-5, 0-1)
Canyon opened league play with a win for the 11th straight year, defeating Hart 56-27 on the road. Sophomore Darby Dunn powered the effort with 27 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
The Cowboys broke the game open with a 20-point second quarter, snapping a four-game skid in the process.
They will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s matchup at Saugus. Hart seeks to end a three-game losing streak Friday at Valencia.
Saugus (5-1, 1-0) Dominates Castaic (1-4, 0-1)
Saugus continued its strong start with a commanding 73-32 win over Castaic. The Centurions jumped out to a 27-14 lead in the first quarter and shut out the Coyotes in the second to go up 44-14 at halftime.
Castaic showed improvement in the second half, scoring 18 points, but the early deficit proved insurmountable. The Centurions host Canyon on Friday, while Castaic faces West Ranch after a Wednesday road game against Sun Valley Magnet.
Valencia (4-1) Prepares for League Opener
Valencia enters league play after a strong non-league run, winning four of its first five games. The Vikings are looking to bounce back from a 63-49 loss to Redondo Union, where a sluggish fourth quarter sealed their fate.
Valencia opens Foothill League action at home Friday against Hart.
