West Ranch is set to make its girls’ flag football CIF-SS semifinal debut Saturday evening following a commanding win over Canyon Springs in the quarterfinals.
The Wildcats surged in the second half after being tied 14-14 at halftime, pulling away to defeat Canyon Springs 34-20.
“At halftime, I told them: it’s a tied game, and this isn’t over. Reset and execute one play at a time, one flag pull at a time,” said West Ranch Head Coach Mark Hornberger. “That’s how we’ve fought all season, and this game was no exception. They answered the call, locking in on both sides of the ball in the second half. It was electric to watch from the sideline.”
With Canyon Springs behind them, the Wildcats now turn their focus to their semifinal matchup against King High School.
“This one’s going to be a gritty fight—King’s loaded with playmakers, especially at quarterback,” said Hornberger. “We just lock in on what we can control and bring the intensity. Shut them down with elite defense and let our offense do what it’s done all season: make plays. Same mindset every week – know your job and execute.”
Defensively, the Wildcats have been dominant, with Lelia Barton and Olivia Esparza both leading the team with 17 sacks. Freshman Rachelle Clark has also made major contributions, leading the team with 14 interceptions, followed by Savannah Patton with 13.
Heading into Saturday’s matchup, Hornberger said he and the coaching staff are proud of how the team has executed all season, and seeing that effort carry into the playoffs is especially rewarding.
“When we kicked off in May, you never truly know the team until the pieces hit the chessboard,” said Hornberger. “We had playmakers who could keep us competitive, but this group has evolved into something truly special with every victory. So many players crave the ball, each driven to prove themselves the moment it’s in their hands.”
Having already surpassed last year’s team in their playoff run, West Ranch is entering uncharted territory but doing so with confidence as they look to get the job done on the road Saturday at 5 p.m. against King High School.
